Rotaract Mentoring Program
PP Hobart Joost and PP Jay Plotkin along with Will Torres have begun a program that will partner our members with a Rotaractor in the same profession.  These young professionals are the future of our city and our businesses.   This program offers the opportunity to meet with them once a month perhaps at lunch or after work (or a time that is mutually agreed upon) to discuss the issues they are facing as they work their way through today's corporate environment.  If you are interested in participating in this program, sign up at the next meeting.

             Mobile Health Clinic

The Blood Alliance has  generously handed the title deed to a retiring mobile bus with a replacement value of $235,000 to the Rotary Club of South Jacksonville's PP Odette Struys -- who has swiftly identified a new home for it with the Boston-based St. Boniface Haiti Foundation. The organization runs a 75-bed hospital with outlying clinics in Southern Haiti for  more than 25 years.

A Mobile Health Clinic Bus Committee has been established to logistically plan the vehicle's passage to Haiti with Deerwood President, Dr. Bill Cody, PP Barry Covington, PP Vicki-Lynn Gloger, Patrick Victor, Christine Goldsmith, Chris Bouton, members from The Blood Alliance that include its CFO, Jack Wolcott and PP Odette, and Sarah, a representative from Rotaract.

A Rotary logo is being planned for the sides of the bus and other areas have been identified for other partners who can help with the logistics of transporting the bus to Haiti.

If anyone would like to get engaged with this exciting project, please reach out to Odette: ostruys@thebloodalliance.org

Minutarian Minute Week 20

As you know, every 4th week is recap time for the previous three weeks, so here we go!

Week 17: A report on our District’s Rotary Day event on Monday, October 20th, at the Jacksonville Omni Hotel. Rotarians from practically every club in our District heard Rotary International President-Elect Nominee, John Germ, and Pakistan’s National PolioPlus Chair, Aziz Memon talk about Rotary’s epic project to wipe the scourge of polio from the face of the Earth. Our own Foundation Chair, PDG Cynde Covington, who also serves as our Zone End Polio Now coordinator concluded the program with insights on our local effort and a $20,000 contribution from our District to end polio.

Week 18: Mention of the completion of my DG club visits and a wish that each Rotarian had the opportunity to see what incredible acts of kindness and service take place through the good works of the Rotarians in our clubs. Affirming that you are part of one of the greatest service organizations the world has ever seen. Because of your efforts we will continue to Light Up Rotary in a big, bold and beautiful way!

Week 19: A reminder that November is Foundation month and to think of The Rotary Foundation (TRF) as two parts:
•    Part 1: What The Rotary Foundation (TRF) does to benefit communities all over the world; and
•    Part 2: What we do as Rotarians to fuel the efforts of The Rotary Foundation.

As Rotarians we fuel The Rotary Foundation in a number of ways – from Every Rotarian Every Year, more commonly known as EREY (eee – RAY), to Paul Harris Society, to Benefactor and for some – by joining the Arch Klumph Society! Regardless of the amount, every contribution to TRF helps Rotary do good in the world. Think about what you can do to fuel The Rotary Foundation. It is one of the most efficient and effective avenues for your charitable giving.

Event Reminders:
May 8-10: Save the dates as we combine our annual District Conference and District Assembly into one big event. We’ll storm Flagler College in St. Augustine to Light Up the family of Rotary. Look for an agenda and more details soon.

For more on these events please go to www.rotary6970.org on the home page under the District Events column.

Minutarian Minute Week 18

On Monday of this week I complete my District Governor club visits. It has been an exhilarating and remarkable experience. The diversity of our clubs in District 6970 is amazingly refreshing. And that is greatly appreciated by this District Governor after making visits to 60 different Rotary Clubs! Each club has its own culture and character – from traditional to very casual – from breakfast to lunch to hors d oeuvres to dinner. And though quite diverse, all of our clubs share Rotary’s common purpose: Joining business and professional leaders; exchanging ideas; and taking action to serve our communities and to do good in the world.

I know it’s not for everyone, but I wish each Rotarian could make the rounds to visit every club in our District. You’d see what incredible acts of kindness and service take place through the good works of the Rotarians in our clubs. You would know with absolute certainty that you are part of one of the greatest service organizations the world has ever seen. And you’d be darn proud to be a Rotarian in District 6970.

I want to take this time to thank all of you for serving – you’re an amazing group of people. Through your efforts I know we will continue to Light Up Rotary in a big, bold and beautiful way!

Event Reminders:

November 15 and 16: We need volunteers to help conduct interviews for the outbound applicants in our Rotary Youth Exchange program. We will be interviewing over 60 applicants to fill 20 slots. So a lot of help will be needed. Please pitch-in to make sure that we select the best representatives from our District to spend the 2015-2016 school year studying abroad. Go to our District website to find out how you can sign-up to help for a half-day, whole day or both days. It’s a very rewarding experience.

May 8-10: Save the dates as we combine our annual District Conference and District Assembly into one big event.

Minutarian Minute Week 17
Trick or treat came early here in District 6970. And it was definitely a treat when the Rotary Club of Jacksonville hosted our District Days event on Monday, October 20th, at the Omni Hotel. We don’t have the official count yet, but Rotarians from practically every club in our District were there to hear Rotary International President-Elect Nominee, John Germ, and Pakistan’s National PolioPlus Chair, Aziz Memon present the latest updates from the Rotary International PolioPlus Committee. The event was capped-off when our District Rotary Foundation Chair, PDG Cynde, presented a $20,000 check from our District’s global grant funds to John and Aziz toward the End Polio Now campaign –  $10,000 for each presenter . There will be a video available soon thanks to RC Amelia Island Rotarian Stan Cottle. Stay tuned for more details on that.

And now for the big announcement of the week! Working closely with DGE Fel and DGN Marshall, we have decided to combine our District Conference and District Assembly into one really awesome weekend event. So mark your calendars now for May 8-10, 2015. And be on the lookout for an announcement with more details. It will be coming your way soon. And here’s a hint: It will be from the Poncé de Percé.

Event Reminders:

November 1: Deadline for the submission of District Governor nominations to serve during the 2017-2018 Rotary year.

November 15 and 16: We need volunteers to help conduct interviews for the outbound applicants in our Rotary Youth Exchange program. We will be interviewing over 60 applicants to fill 17 slots. Photos From Recent Rotary District Meeting

The recent Rotary District meeting held at the Omni last Monday, 10/20, with all area Rotary Clubs featured an iron lung that has helped save lives afflicted with Polio, to a global update with a hopeful end-date in sight to eradicate the disease by December 2018, to the tune of a total of $5.5B! It was also announced that Jaguars owner Shad Khan is the first and only NFL celebrity to join the "We are this close..." worldwide Polio ad campaign. Wayne and Delores Weaver were also honored for their personal donations to Rotary and for their collaborative efforts with Rotary District Clubs in recognizing Rotary at one Jaguars home game each season, which Shad Khan has pledged to continue.

Rotary International's President-Elect, John Germ, was also on hand to offer his congratulations, with former DG Cynde Covington, to our District 6970 for raising more than $4M towards End Polio Now. It was also noted that North  Floridians are extremely generous - making our region the 6th most giving place to live in America!
