Meet Judge David Gooding
Family Court

David Gooding received a B.A from the University of Florida in 1974 and a Juris Doctor  from the University of  Miami School of Law in 1988.  He was elected to the Circuit Court in 2002.  Judge Gooding presided in Unified family Court/Juvenile divisions for 10 years.  In 2009-2010, he presided over more than 90 felony trials to verdict, including Capital cases.

In January, 2011, Judge Gooding returned to preside in Unified Family Court/Juvenile division and to serve as Lead Judge for implementation of Dependency Model Court in Duval County, Jacksonville, Florida.  Originally established in 2007, Judge Gooding’s Crossover Docket addressing the needs of Dependent children with Delinquency Court involvement is a collaborative approach to turning children from bleak futures in the justice system.  As an evolution of the Crossover Docket model, Judge Gooding is leading Jacksonville in its implementation of Girls Court to address the needs of this high risk population.

Judge Gooding has served as a member and subcommittee chair of the Florida Supreme Court Steering Committee on Families and Children, Task Force for Protection of Children, and currently serves on the Courts’ Florida Dependency Court Improvement Project, the Florida Conference of Circuit Court Judges Education Committee, the Board of the Florida Chapter of  the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, and the Executive Committee of the Duval County Children’s Mental Health Initiative.  Judge Gooding has received numerous local, state and national awards for his work with juveniles, primarily in expediting adoptions from foster care, including the United States Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute Angel in Adoption and the William B. Gladstone Award, established by the Florida Supreme Court and the Department of Children and Families and awarded by peers.  Judge Gooding is a frequent speaker at statewide and national educational conferences where he presents established case management techniques proven to expedite adoptions through the courts and evidence based best practices.  Judge Gooding remains active in local, state and national organizations involving foster care and juvenile justice.
