Meet David Daugherty
Wounded Warrior Project
David Daugherty had to navigate his own way through the mental health system to address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
“You take one step toward fighting your anger,” says David, “and then two steps back struggling with rage. You work on controlling your hyper-vigilance, and then fall into withdrawal.”
David enlisted in the military in 1990, deployed in 2004 and 2005 in the Air Force to serve in Combat Search and Rescue, then in 2006 as a Green Beret in the Army National Guard.
It was in a VA hospital where he first learned of his diagnosis of PTSD. There he began to understand the reasons behind his behavior as a first step toward stability in his life. But he still had to deal with setbacks.
“I had to take responsibility for my own recovery. The key is owning it, not posting blame, and doing a lot of forgiving – of yourself and others.”
For David, there are three major accomplishments he feels he has achieved in dealing with PTSD. He’s accepted help and become more teachable, he’s deepened his relationship with his children, and he’s doing his best to earn the trust of others.
“I’ve gone from staring at the ceiling all day long to attending graduate studies in counseling and religion. Along with that, I interned for six months in a homeless shelter, and another six months in a hospital chaplaincy program. Now, increasing awareness to the mission of Wounded Warrior Project and reaching out to other warriors is the next evolution in my process of recovery. It can be emotionally draining, but it brings healing to myself and others.”
David is looking forward to completing his studies and entering full-time ministry.
“I want to help teach others better ways to live,” says David, “and help them find their own way.”

Stevan is a CFP® professional with Raymond James- Ameris Bank. He has been a Financial Advisor for 12 years. Prior to that he practiced law for 5 years. Stevan graduated from George Mason University School of Law in 1996 and Western Kentucky University with a BS in Accounting in 1993.
He was born in Lynn, Cheshire, England and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. He has two boys, Aden & Liam, ages 10 and 8.
