Minutarian Update, Week 3

Greetings District 6970 Rotarians, are you ready to Light Up Rotary?!?
I already know that a couple of clubs have plans afoot to fire it up this year with their own special “Rotary Days” events. The Deland club is reaching out to their community to go “bowling for literacy”; and a group of clubs in Volusia County, led by the Port Orange-South Daytona club, is planning to host The Family of Rotary for a baseball game at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. By the way, there is a very interesting piece of baseball and cultural history associated with this historic ballpark – go to Wikepedia and check it out. Way to go Daytona Beach for leading the way in 1946!

•    On Saturday, August 2nd, it’s the annual Rotary Youth Exchange Welcome Home Dinner which takes place at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. All Rotarians are invited.
•    On Saturday, August 16th, it’s our District’s Light Up Rotary Seminar at the Thrasher-Horne Conference Center in Orange Park. Rotary International Director Robert Hall will be our keynote speaker at lunch that day. All Rotarians are invited, but it is really important that club Presidents and Presidents-Elect, as well as Foundation, Membership and Public Image chairs attend. Sign-up today because seating is limited.

WELCOME COLE PEPPER

Cole Pepper has spent the last 20 years working in sports and media. A veteran of the Jacksonville sports media scene, Pepper began his career in Kansas City covering the Royals, Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks as well as working with his father’s advertising agency, Pepper & Associates.

Pepper has worked in Jacksonville since 1996 spending 15 seasons as the studio host of the Jaguars Radio Network.  He has also called play-by-play for the Jacksonville Sharks, Jacksonville Suns, Jacksonville Tomcats and Jacksonville University. He has also appeared on First Coast News and WJXT Channel 4 as a sports anchor and on WOKV AM/FM and 1010 XL radio as a host, anchor and reporter. This fall, he will begin his second season calling the play-by-play for Bolles Bulldogs football.

Pepper’s experience isn’t related to performing in front of the camera or mic. Off air he has helped to develop campaigns for numerous clients and has crafted the message for local businesses in print, on radio and on television. In 2013, he co-founded WhitePepper Sports Marketing, a division of Client Focused Media, a Jacksonville-based integrated marketing firm.

Pepper is active in the community, annually emceeing dozens of events and serving on the board of trustees for Daniel, the oldest child service agency in Florida, having served as the Vice Chairman of the Board.  Every spring, he and his in-laws host the Jacksonville Backyard BBQ Championships, a fundraiser for the Glyn Cook Memorial Scholarship for Daniel Kids. In six years, the event has raised over $180,000.

Pepper and his wife Emily, a Jacksonville native, live in Avondale with the world’s cutest and most spoiled dachshund, Penny.  

 Minutarian Update, Week 2

Greetings District 6970 Rotarians, are you ready for some football??!!  No, not the World Cup soccer-style football, we're talking about the American style football we all know and love.  This season marks our 11th year of partnering with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars.  The purpose of this partnership is to raise money for our clubs and the Foundation by selling tickets to Jaguar home football games.  Early this week, team captains from each club in our District were invited to tour the newly renovated EverBank field-home of the Jaugars.  Thanks to a major investment by Jaguar's owner, Shad Kahn, EverBank Field will be THE VENUE for NFL Football in 2014-featuring the leagues' largest jumbo-trons in both the north and south end zones, in-stadium swimming pools and a lot more.  The stadium itself will be well worth the price of admission.  And your club will be the direct beneficiary of a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold.  So let's get the spirit, suit up for the game and sell some tickets!  Go Jags!!

Changing subject, here are a couple of "mark your calendar" items for this summer:

• On Saturday, August 2, it's the annual Rotary Youth Exchange Welcome Home Dinner for our outbound students who are returning from all around the globe after a year abroad.   This year's welcome home dinner takes place at Riverside PResbyterian Church in Jacksonville.  All Rotarians are invited to attend and listen to our exchange students as they share their life-changing experiences made possible by the Rotary Youth Exchange program.  Look for details on our District's website - www.rotary6970.org
• On saturday, August 16, it's our District's Light Up Rotary Seminar.  Sound boring? It's not!  Come to the Thrasher-Horned Conference Center in Orange Park to get informed, inspired and ready to see Rotary in a whole new light.  That's right; we're gonna Light Up Rotary with your help.  So plan to be here.  By the way for many years this event was known to most as the Foundation Seminar; and last year it was expanded to be the Foundation/Membership Seminar.  But this year, it's the Light Up Rotary Seminar, which will encompass all elements of Rotary International's brand visioning process.  Details about the various sessions will be available soon on our District website.

President Bill Jaycox

Bill Jaycox, AIA, founder and Principal of Jaycox Reinel Architects is a native Floridian. Born and raised in Ocala, Florida, he studied architecture in Genoa, Italy and has a Master of Architecture Degree from Clemson University. He established the firm shortly after becoming Florida Board registered in 1987 to pursue his passion for design of upscale residential and historic restoration projects. His commitment to excellence created a large client base including oceanfront resort hotels, retirement communities and residential estates.  He partnered with Stephen A. Reinel and now the firm specializes in high end residential and hospitals.

Pres Bill is active in the community serving in the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects as a Director and Committee Chairman, a Rotarian and has been recognized by the Mayor’s Neighborhood Council for his contributions to the community. 

He married his wife Mary from Ottawa, Canada 27 years ago and has 3 children; Noelle, a publicist in LA; Shannon, who was a rotary youth exchange student in Brazil, just graduated from FSU and is headed to China for the next year to teach English and Randy, also an exchange student who went to Hungary and is now in college at UCF. Mary spends her time serving the community on the board of directors for the Florida Lyme Disease Association and keeping track of  3 very active children.

When he is not working, Pres Bill is hunting, fishing or traveling with his family somewhere in the world.

Club Meeting on July 8th
 Please plan to join new Club President Bill Jaycox for the club meeting on Tuesday, July 8th.  President Bill wants to hear what you, the members, think about various aspects of our club.  During the meeting, members will utilize a real-time, interactive tool to answer questions about our club (food, venue, meeting time, fellowship & service activities etc.)  Please plan to join us - your input is important!

Note - As this is a working/planning meeting, it is suggested that members wait to bring guests/prospective members to the July 15th (or later) meeting.

Minutarian Update, Week 51

One week to go in a great Rotary Year. Sound familiar? Please remember: the fun, fellowship, business and work of Rotary go on every day all around the world. We merely change much of our leadership. We don't fire 'em, we just move 'em on to the next thing. 

Speaking of changing leadership, induction events have started all over the District. Thanks to all those that have served their clubs this year. Some will continue to serve in their existing or new roles, and others will step into leadership positions for the first time. Thanks to all. 

Thanks to the hard work of our webmaster, Howard Kelley, Club awards are now on the District website, Awards tab! You will also find a full listing of our Rotaract and Interact Clubs. If your club's Interact isn't listed, it's probably due to a lapse in paperwork. It can be rectified, but we need to follow up. Just let DGE Percy, or I know and we'll be happy to help. 

June brings many sad goodbyes as we all wish our departing youth exchange students well on journeys to their other home. Thank you for enriching our lives. 

Speaking of youth, RYLA is this coming weekend at UNF. Good luck RYLAarians, and all our volunteers that make it happen. 

The Rotary Club of Downtown Gainesville showed it's not too late in the Rotary year, inducting two new members last week. Welcome Jon Uman and Ben Meyers. It should be pointed out that Ben is a young professional in his twenties. Age is not and should not be a barrier to what Past District Governor Tommy Grimes always said, "Doing Good". 

Yes, it's a long minute this week, and next's may be even longer. Bear with me!
