Charlie is a native of Newport News, Virginia and earned his BS degree from Virginia Tech. He has lived in Jacksonville 14 years. Charlie is married to Brenda, a RN at Baptist Medical Center, and he is the proud father of twin daughters and a son. He is the Past President and Secretary of the Rotary Club of Southpoint Jacksonville and chaired the annual fundraising event for two years to fund the first patient room in the new Wolfson Children’s Hospital building under construction at this time. Charlie's hobbies include shooting sports, tennis and fishing.

Meet Jerry Mallot

President of JAXUSA Partnership

Jerry M. Mallot is executive vice president of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce and president of JAXUSA Partnership, formerly Cornerstone. Mallot directs a staff of 12 in the areas of Business Development, International, Workforce and Research. He led the formation of a seven-country economic development program to expand high wage jobs in northeast Florida. During his tenure, Jacksonville has seen its greatest number of new and expanded companies, as well as new jobs created, in the city’s history.

Mallot serves on the Board of the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities and is president of Leadership Jacksonville. He is past president of the Florida Economic Development Council and World Trade Center Association of Florida. Mallot has served on various Boards including Enterprise Florida, Visit Jacksonville and the World Affairs Council. He has been named the Professional Economic Developer of the Year in both Florida and Kansas.

Prior to coming to Jacksonville in January of 1994, Mallot was senior vice president of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and executive director of the Tampa Bay Partnership, a six-county regional economic development program.

Mallot, with his wife Janet, spent the majority of his life in Wichita, Kansas where he served as president of the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce and led economic development for 19 years.

He received a Bachelor’s Degree in business and a Master’s Degree in economics from Wichita State University. Mallot has earned the Certified Economic Developer and Certified Chamber Executive designations, the top professional certifications in these fields.

Mallot enjoys golf and outdoor activities, has six grandchildren and serves as a big brother in the Big Brother, Big Sister Program.

Meet Benjamin Warner,

President & CEO, Jacksonville Community Council Inc.

Ben Warner is the President & CEO of Jacksonville Community Council Inc. (JCCI). He has been at JCCI since 1998, serving most recently as the organization’s Vice President before becoming the organization’s fourth executive leader since 1975.

Ben is a past president of the National Association of Planning Councils (NAPC) and was inaugural president of the international Community Indicators Consortium, a network of institutions which seeks to advance the art and science of community indicators across the globe. For his work with NAPC he was presented with the Distinguished Service Award, the fifth such award presented in the organization’s long history.

Before joining JCCI in 1998, Ben worked in the mental health field, where he directed day treatment programs for dually-diagnosed (mental illness/developmentally disabled) individuals in Northeast and Central Florida. He also worked with homelessness issues, developing a highly successful pilot transitional housing program. For his work with homelessness, Ben was awarded the Michael R. Wilson Social Justice Award in 1997.

At JCCI, Ben has staffed community-based public policy studies and implementation efforts on topics such as arts and culture, growth management, regional cooperation, and city finance. In addition, Ben works to develop, maintain and enhance JCCI’s Quality of Life Progress Report, the Community Snapshot, and an annual Race Relations Progress Report.

He serves as a consultant with Community Works, assisting multiple communities around the world in the creation of community-based public policy organizations and the development of community indicators. His publications include chapters in two books by the International Society of Quality-of-Life Studies, case studies for the Alliance for Regional Stewardship, and Leading Social Indicators: Measuring What Works, Making a Difference for the National Association of Planning Councils.

He was a member of the 2005 inaugural class of the Northeast Florida Regional Leadership Academy and served on its curriculum committee for 2006-07. He is a member of Leadership Jacksonville’s class of 2008 and has continued his involvement through service on the curriculum committee since 2008.

Ben completed his undergraduate studies in Sociology at Brigham Young University. He received his Masters in Social Work from Florida State University.

Meet Brian Pippin

Conservation & Efficiency Specialist, JEA

Brian has a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Memphis. He has worked with JEA for six years; the past four as a Conservation & Efficiency Specialist tasked with educating JEA customers about energy and water conservation techniques and products.
Brian has earned the following credentials recognized in the “green” community:

Class 1 HERS Rater from the Residential Energy Services Network and the Florida Solar Energy Center
Building Analyst (BA) designation from the Building Performance Institute
Certified Energy Manager (CEM) from the Association of Energy Engineers
Certifying agent for the Florida Green Building Coalition’s “Green Home” designation
Florida Water Star Apprentice Inspector from the St. Johns River Water Management District
Irrigation Site Manager from the Florida Irrigation Society

He has completed numerous continuing education courses in building science fundamentals, building and remodeling “green” and general energy and water conservation efforts.

He is married to his lovely wife, Jennifer, of twelve years and has a precocious five year old son and a new baby boy on the way!

At the Board meeting this past week, the following actions occurred:
Approved for your consideration into membership - Charlie Sheppard, sponsor is PP Hobart Joost. Charlie is a past member of Southpoint Rotary and would like to continue his Rotary membership with the South Jacksonville club. If anyone objects, please notify the Board in writing within ten (10) days.

The event at the Alhambra was well received. A second social will be offered in the Spring-so stay tuned to see what show we will be selecting.

Roger Painter has resigned. He is retiring from WW GAY and will be enjoying some relaxation and travel. We wish him well.

The Board approved funding for a water project in Haiti, headed up by our own, John McCarthy; and funds for an educational project in Brazil. Contacts for that project were made through our former exchange student, Shannon Jaycox.

We are pleased to welcome back to membership Terry Pasket. Terry is with Merrill Lynch and will be chairing our upcoming blood drive-let's all get to work!!

Congratulations to Ron Patrick. Ron is our newest member and joined us last week. Ron is Vice President, Wealth Management Advisor with Merrill Lynch and a graduate of Princeton University. Ron is married to Kim who is employed at CSX as a Manager in Transportation. Be sure to greet Ron at the door for the next few weeks.

Clive Wynne is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Florida. He was born and raised on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. He studied at University College London and the University of Edinburgh and has been at the University of Florida since 2002.

He is interested in the behavior of animals, including cognitive behavior. Recently he has been concentrating on the behavior of dogs and other canids. For more about his current research visit www.caninecognition.com

Carolyn Gentry and her granddaughter, Judlide, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge during their pre-Christmas trip to New York City. Carolyn's great-grandparents were present at the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge on May 24, 1883, so Carolyn has long-held the dream to walk the bridge. Carolyn said, "It was exhilarating and inspiring to walk the bridge on such a beautiful sunny afternoon. Lunch at the River Cafe under the bridge was a suitable reward!"

Year of Time...

…Though even thinking on the subject of time may prove discomforting, it is not a bad idea—especially at the beginning of a new year.

As we look into 2012 we look at a block of time. We see 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds. And all is a gift from God. We have done nothing to deserve it, earn it, or purchased it. Like the air we breathe, time comes to us as a part of life.

The gift of time is not ours alone. It is given equally to each person. Rich and poor, educated and ignorant, strong and weak—every man, woman and child has the same twenty-four hours every day.

Another important thing about time is that you cannot stop it. There is no way to slow it down, turn it off, or adjust it. Time marches on.

And you cannot bring back time. Once it is gone, it is gone. Yesterday is lost forever. If yesterday is lost, tomorrow is uncertain. We may look ahead at a full year’s block of time, but we really have no guarantee that we will experience any of it.

Obviously, time is one of our most precious possessions. We can waste it. We can worry over it. We can spend it on ourselves. Or, as good stewards, we can invest it in the kingdom of God.

The new year is full of time. As the seconds tick away, will you be tossing time out the window, or will you make every minute count?

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Member Happenings! Holly with friends playing Tennis in sunny California PE Jim Lanahan competed in the Florida Senior Games Swimming Championships last weekend. He placed second in the 100 yd Free, 3^rd in the 50 yard free, 3rd in the 100 yard Individual Medley, 4^th in the 50 Yard Breaststroke and 4^th in the 50 yard Fly. Double awards were issued because the meet was also an International Seniors Meet.

Rick Catlett has resided in Jacksonville since the age of two. Over the past 25 years, Rick has held three jobs. He spent eleven and a half years as a Senior Administrative Aide under two different mayors. Then for three years, he was the Executive Vice President of Touchdown Jacksonville, which was the ownership group that acquired the Jacksonville Jaguars. For the past eleven years, he has served as the President of the Gator Bowl Association.

During his tenure at the Gator Bowl, Rick was elected and continues to serve on the Executive Committee of the Football Bowl Association. He served as the Chairman for two consecutive years in 2000 and 2001.

Rick has served on numerous Boards and Commissions during his professional career including the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, the Boys and Girls Clubs and is currently on the Board of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and Revive the Pride for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Come and join your fellow Rotary members for an evening of Holiday tradition with a special performance of A Christmas Carole at the new Alhambra Dinner Theatre. Ticket prices are $100 each, $150 per couple, $40 for children 16 years of age and under.

Members are purchasing tickets at a brisk rate and including their friends and neighbors. “Economic Uncertainty and Utility Rates”

Dr. James M. Chansler, P.E. is Chief Operating Officer at JEA where he has been employed since June, 1997. He has worked in City and County Government for 38 years in various capacities ranging from Assistant City Manager and Department Head to Laboratory Technician and Utilities Plant Operator. He also taught Engineering Technology at Western Kentucky University for eight years.

Dr. Chansler is a Registered Professional Engineer in two states and holds degrees in public administration, urban and regional planning, and earth sciences…and has written numerous articles on utility engineering and organizational leadership. He is an active member of various organizations including the Large Public Power Council, the Water Environment Federation, and Rotary International.

Gingerbread-A Sweet Success!

As the holidays approach, we can be proud of our leadership within our community. Our wonderful Gingerbread fundraiser was handed over to the Jacksonville Historical Society this year and they had excellent turnout for their first event. A total of 36 homes were brought in for display and some of our members turned out to assist with building the display and helping to insure their success. We hope that you will take time to go over and see the Gingerbread Extravaganza and support all of their fine efforts.

Stacy Ridenour joined the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra as Executive Director in October of 2008. She is responsible for managing the fiscal and human resources of the organization to achieve the greatest artistic and community service potential. She also works to build partnerships with other arts and community organizations and businesses.

Prior to her appointment as the JSO Executive Director, Ms. Ridenour served as Executive Director of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra from 1998-2008. Ms. Ridenour previously served as Vice President/General Manager of the Grand Rapids Symphony. She also held the position of Program Manager for the American Music Center in New York City.

Ms. Ridenour holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in Arts Management from New York University.

Ms. Ridenour is an active volunteer with Jacksonville Rotary. Her husband is concert pianist Richard Ridenour who performed as soloist with the Jacksonville Symphony in 2005 and in 2011. They have two sons: Brandon (26) is the trumpet player for the Canadian Brass and Ross (22) currently works for American Eagle. Ms. Ridenour is a native of Missoula, Montana. She and her husband enjoy snow and water skiing in Montana and Michigan, and hiking and biking near their home in old Arlington.
