Minutarian Update, Week 12 (Sept 17th)

DG Art's message this week announces September as New Generations month on the Rotary calendar, which is now referred to as Youth Service month.  In the Rotary world, Youth Service includes Youth Exchange, Rotaract, Interact, Early Act, Rotary Kids, RYLA, etc. Thereby, engaging in all aspects of service with our next generations of Rotarians.

DG Art encourages clubs not engaged in Youth Service to "get engaged".  The RYLA program is one of the best, and our Interact Summit is being planned for mid October.  Clubs that have not already submitted their intention to host an exchange student next year should do so this week.

Minutarian Update, Week 11 (September 10th)

This week, the Minutarian Update was delivered personally by District Governor Art MacQueen.  Each year Rotary leadership, both past and current, attends a training and informational seminar, called Zone Institute. The institute neets yearly, rotating throughout the Southeastern states that make up zones 33 and 34. DGE Percy, DGN Fel, many of our Past District Governors and I just returned from this multi day event. One of our former District 6970 Governors, was totally taken by surprise when during a plenary session it was announced she had been awarded Rotary’s International Service Award for a Polio Free World. This award is bestowed on no more than 10 Rotarians worldwide in any given Rotary year, from a pool of well over 1 million.

Our well deserving recipient, has not only supported our Foundation with her treasure, but also her time and talent. Besides Foundation involvement at the District, Rotary Leadership Institute, Evanston Foundation meetings and many other events, she has also organized NID (National Immunization Day) teams and personally delivered polio vaccinations to the children of India twice. Please join me in thanking and congratulating PDG Cynde Covington, for her incredible efforts and well deserved receipt of this award.

PDG Cynde knows what it means to Engage Rotary, Change Lives!

Welcome Art MacQueen, DistrictGovernor

WE MEET AT RIVER CITY BREWING COMPANY
Lunch begins at noon - Meeting begins at 12:30 p.m.

District Governor Art MacQueen

Art MacQueen grew up in the Detroit area and attended Eastern Michigan University.  Married to Gingie, his wife of 35 years they have two children, four grandchildren and are blessed to have the kids and their families all residing in the Northeast Florida area.

Art worked in retail management prior to accepting the position of CEO and President of a Northern Michigan company manufacturing industrial cutting tool packaging.  After 13 years in that role it was time to pursue a warmer climate and the MacQueens relocated to Florida in 1995, “as our parents had done before us”.  In Florida Art stayed busy volunteering with The American Red Cross in disaster response and officiating local track and cross country events.

A second career presented itself when Art went to work for a telecom company eventually becoming the Southeast sales manager for the equipment division.  Following 11 years of service a second attempt at retiring was made in 2009.   Once again, however, that did not last long as old friends in the telecom software business reached out and Art accepted the position of Special Projects Manager for the Pittsburg based firm.   Gingie is employed as an admissions director for a long term health and rehab facility as well as a fitness instructor for a local area gym.

While employed in telecom Art was visiting a Daytona area medical firm discussing their equipment needs and was asked by the office manager to be a guest at her Thursday morning Rotary meeting.  Having no idea what Rotary was about but seeing it as a great opportunity to network with local business professionals he attended his first meeting in the spring of 2001.  The Rotary Club of Daytona Beach West has been Art’s Rotary home since that first visit.

Art has served in a number of capacities at the club level including President in 2004-05, Sgt-at-Arms for a number of years and is currently a club board member.   At the District level Art was an Assistant Governor in 2006-09, and has also served on the Fund and Procedures Committee, Share Committee, District Grants Committee Chair and Long Range Planning Committee. Art is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a Benefactor.  Wife Gingie is also a Paul Harris Fellow.

For hobbies, the MacQueens enjoy boating, riding their motorcycle, paddle boarding kayaking, running, golf and anything involving the kids.

Thank you to all those who participated to make this a successful drive!

What Paul Harris Said

RGHF History Day

What Paul Harris Said, a feature of RGHF since December 2001.

Paul Harris
Paul P. Harris, Founder of Rotary 23 February 1905

"May Rotarians continue to be ambassadors of good-will to high and low, rich and poor, to all races, to the devotees of all religious faiths and to members of all political parties, purveyors of tolerance, forbearance, justice, kindliness, neighborliness and friendliness to the inhabitants of this snug little world, the best little world of which we know." Paul P. Harris, "This Rotarian Age" page 257, 1935.

RGHF Pin with
RGHF since 11 October 2000
Would the world be better off if there were 1,000,000,000 Rotarians? Look what just a few Rotarians did nearly a century ago. The key is that they still knew where they came from. They knew their history. That was a powerful tool. If today's  1,000,000 Rotarians knew what they knew, we might soon be 2,000,000 Rotarians and 2 would become 4 and so forth.

What Paul Harris Said, is our longest running feature, started in December of 2001. His writings are timeless and speak to Rotary leaders and visitors at www.whatpaulharriswrote.org
