Join us for South Jacksonville Rotary's Suns baseball event on April 10th at 5:45 p.m.  Game time is 7:05 p.m.  The event is $16.95 per person.  Children under 3 get in free.  The ticket includes group seating in section #101.  It also includes Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Popcorn and Sodas.

 President Odette Struys Visits Rotary Club of Johor Bahru


President Odette Struys presents the South Jacksonville's Rotary Club Banner to Ng Swee Poh, President of the Rotary Club of Johor Bahru.  


As President Odette returned from her travel, she saw a Rotary polio eradication advertisement in the Chicago airport.  Her quote about the experience, "Made me proud to be a Rotarian!!!"
Rotary Literacy Project
The well-known and well-attended “Box-A-Go-Go” is making its return Spring appearance in April.  “Books-A-Go-Go” Executive Director, Betty Metz, was our guest at the April 3 meeting to remind us about the importance of placing a child’s first book in the hands of children who would not receive one otherwise.  Contributing books (new or gently used, age appropriate for a first time reader) and donations will make our Spring Literacy Project even more successful than last fall!  (Donations can be made directly to Patti or they can be charged to your account.)  Thanks!

District Conference  
This year the District Conference is a little different.  It will be 3 mini conferences held on 3 different days in 3 different locations.  The mini-conference on Friday April 20, 2012 will be in Jacksonville at EverBank Field from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  For more information visit the District web site:

Awards Nominations

The Public Relations-awards Committee of Rotary of South Jacksonville is proud to open nominations for two annual awards-The Frank Sherman Award and the Good Government Award.

The Frank Sherman “Service Above Self “ Award
The Frank W. Sherman-Service Above Self Award was established in honor of our Charter President and sponsored by the American National Bank.  Frank Sherman founded Southside Rotary in 1955.

This is an Annual award given to a Rotarian in the greater Jacksonville area who has demonstrated service to Rotary, his/her business or profession and community; selected by a committee appointed by the President and approved by the Board. 

Past recipients have included Walter Bussells, I. M. Sulzbacher and Ashley Verlander.

The Frank Sherman Award is open to nominations from throughout the Greater Jacksonville Area. Nominations should be submitted to Neil McGuinness (n.mcguinness@murphy business.com; 904-509-7582) by Tuesday May 22, 2012. The selected nominee will be announced at the “Hail and Farewell” event on June 26.

Good Government Award
The Good Government Award is given annually to a local government official in appreciation of his or her efforts. Past recipients have included Audrey Moran, John Delaney, Sheriff Nat Glover, Rick Mullaney and State Attorney Harry Shorstein.

The Good Government Award is open to nominations from throughout the Greater (multi-county) Jacksonville Area. Nominations should be submitted to Neil McGuinness (n.mcguinness@murphy business.com; 904-509-7582) by Tuesday May 22, 2012. The selected nominee will be announced at the “Hail and Farewell” event on June 26.

Meet Shih-Chang (Rex) Fan Chiang
Rotary Youth Exchange Student

Shih Chang Fan Chiang was born and lives in Taichung, Taiwan.  He lives there with his parents, younger brother and younger sister.  His father, Chun-Liang Fan, is a member of the Rotary Club of Taichung South, District 3460 in Taiwan.  Shih Chang is 15 years old, loves music, likes to hang out with his friends, plays basketball, table tennis, and soccer and runs track.

We know Shih Chaing as Rex. Rex is a Rotary Youth Exchange student sponsored by the South Jacksonville Rotary Club.   He came to Jacksonville, Florida in August 2011.  He attends Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and plays the violin.  Rex became interested in becoming an exchange student after hearing about the program while attending a Rotary meeting with his father.   He wanted to travel to a different country, meet different people and experience a different culture.     

The following is how Rex describes being an exchange student:

"Exchange is about learning.

It's not as easy as learning whatever is taught in school though.

It's about learning how to listen, how to speak, how to think. Learning who you are, who your friends are and the type of people you want as friends. Learning how to trust your innermost feelings, and how to find these feelings in the first place. Learning what's important to you and what is not.

Exchange is about learning how to tolerate, how to accept, how to like and how to love. Learning how to give as you receive and how to trust that everything will even itself out on its own. Learning that your mom and dad do have the right answers sometimes, and that your kid sister isn't such a dumb kid anymore. Learning that sometimes a kiss isn't just a kiss, sometimes it means more, sometimes it means less.

Exchange is about learning how to achieve, how to succeed, how to accomplish.

Learning how to not come in first place and still be proud and how to come in last and admit that you could have done better. Learning that large parties don't necessarily mean a good time. Learning that loneliness doesn't go away in a crowd, and that sometimes its ok to be on your own a Friday or Saturday night. Learning that your lunchtime crowd doesn't constitute your popularity, and that popularity is all a matter of perspective.Learning that boredom is simply laziness of the mind, and watching 3 hours of TV isn't quality relaxation time.

Exchange is about learning how to pack a bag and to pack away a room full of way too much stuff.

Learning how to motivate yourself and how to motivate others. Learning how to swear in all the different languages of all the other exchange students. Learning that people probably like you a whole lot more than they'll ever tell you and that it's your responsibility to make sure your friends know how much you appreciate them.
Exchange is about learning. Learning how to live life."

 Kevin Hyde is a partner with Foley & Lardner, LLP.  Kevin is vice chair of the Labor & Employment Practice and is a member of the Automotive Industry Team.  He has been a deacon or elder with the Lakeshore Church of Christ since 1992.  Kevin has served the community in many roles including Board of Youth Crisis Center, Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida, NE FL Safety Council, Volunteers in Medicine, Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens, just to name a few.
Kevin and Kathi have been married since 1987 and have two daughters, Virginia,19 and Michal, (pronounced Michael) 17.

Meet Curtis Hazel
2012 TPC Tournament Chairmen

Curtis was born in Jacksonville, Fla., and graduated from The Bolles School in 1992. He attended the University of Florida, a study-abroad program in London, and graduated from the University of North Florida. He and his wife, Jenny, live in St. Augustine, and have two children – McKenna (8), and Jackson (6). 

Curtis is involved in a number of community service and volunteer activities. He currently serves on the board for the following organizations; University of North Florida Athletic Department, the Jacksonville School for Autism, River Garden Foundation, and The River Garden Holding Company Board.  He was a founding board member and continues to serve for Children’s Safe Passage, created in 2010. Curtis also serves as a Mentor for Take Stock in Children (TSIC), and is a member of their Leadership Council.

Professionally, Curtis is the founder and president of Hazel Partners LLC, an independent property and casualty insurance firm, specializing in commercial insurance brokerage and risk management consulting.  

Curtis has volunteered with THE PLAYERS for 16 years. His volunteer assignments have taken him from Standard Bearers to General Parking, and have included Special Events, Shuttle, Island Club, Corporate Hospitality, Practice Area, VIP Parking and Benefactors. Curtis has served as Vice Chairman for Player Services, Spectator Services, Facilities and Volunteer Services.   In 2011, he was First-Vice Chairman.  Curtis is now Tournament Chairman, with leadership responsibilities over the 2,000-plus volunteers who work tirelessly to stage the event.

Neil McGuiness, Author of
"The Beaches: A History and Tour"


Neil McGuiness moved to Jacksonville with his parents at age 17.  He attended Jacksonville University and graduated from the University of Florida. After serving three years as a Marine Corps officer, he earned his MBA in Finance at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Neil has had a varied career ranging from owning and operating a 250 passenger paddlewheel riverboat on the St. Johns River to being assistant to the Chairman and CEO of IBM. Neil moved from the technology industry to the investment industry and was President of Fidelity Investments Employer Services Company and later Corporate Senior Vice President of the Prudential  Insurance Company of America in Newark, NJ. Currently Neil is a board member and Chairman of the SEI Private Trust Company, a national thrift in Philadelphia and is a full time business broker and merger and acquisition specialist here in Jacksonville. He owns the First Coast office of Murphy Business and Financial Services in Jacksonville.

Neil is the author of "The Beaches: A History and Tour".  The book is a history and a tour of the 37 mile-long island in North Florida which includes Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra, the Guana Preserve and Vilano Beach.

Welcome Past President Ken Weiss

Associate Director of the Youth Crisis Center Foundation


Kenneth Z. Weiss is the Associate Director of the Youth Crisis Center (YCC) Foundation.  The foundation supports the work of Jacksonville’s Youth Crisis Center.  It will be his topic for the March 13th South Jacksonville Rotary Club's meeting.  YCC is known and has been recognized both nationally and statewide, but is little known by most residents of Jacksonville.

Prior to his current position, Weiss was CEO of Georgian Galleries, Inc. from 1976 until 2008.  Georgian Galleries owned and operated both Ethan Allen and La-Z-Boy Furniture retail locations in West Virginia and North Florida.

From 1964 until 1968 he attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida where he studied Management and Marketing.  After serving in the US Army, Weiss attended West Virginia University, in Morgantown, WV,  where he received a Board of Regents Degree in Journalism and Public Relations in 1978.

A Rotarian since 1979, Weiss served as President of the Rotary Club of South Jacksonville in 2000 and 2001.  Among the numerous organizations and boards on which Weiss has served are:  Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, Hospice of Northeast Florida, Congregation Ahavath Chesed, Mental Health America, Deerwood Country Club and the Mountain Area Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis.

Weiss spearheaded the “Big Wheel” reading program between South Jax Rotary members and students at Hogan-Spring Glen Elementary School and was one of the early supporters of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program during its infancy in District 6970.  His favorite volunteer positions are when he coached youth soccer and basketball teams.

Welcome Past President Albert H. Wilkinson, Jr., MD

"Changes in Medicine"

Dr. Wilkinson is a native Floridian, born and raised in Jacksonville.  He attended public school through the tenth grade, following which he finished high school at Emory University Academy in Oxford, Georgia.  He served in the United States Navy toward the end of World War II and soon thereafter.  After he completed pre-med requirements at Emory University, he attended Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia.  Dr. Wilkinson served a rotating internship on Tulane Services of Charity Hospital in New Orleans followed by residency training in General and Thoracic surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University School of Medicine.  He then began training in children’s surgery including time spent in pediatric pathology and research at Children’s Memorial Hospital and Northwestern School of Medicine in Chicago.  In 1959 Dr. Wilkinson returned to Jacksonville as the first pediatric surgeon in Florida, where for many years he practiced pediatric surgery, served as surgeon-in-chief at two children’s hospitals as well as on their respective Boards of Directors.  For 12 years he served as Chief of Children’s Surgical Services at University Hospital and its predecessor Duval Medical Center.  He founded the first pediatric surgery clinic in Florida at Hope Haven Hospital under the aegis of the Florida Crippled Children’s Commission.  He also served as founding President of the Florida Association of Children’s Hospitals and continues to serve in a part-time capacity for the association.  He was also the founding medical director and director for the planning and development of Nemours Children’s Clinic – Jacksonville.  He has published many papers and in the recent past, a book that deals with children’s hospitals and healthcare.

In 2010, Dr. Wilkinson received the Presidential Citation, Humanitarian Honoree of the Year awarded by “One Jax” and, several years ago, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award as one of Jacksonville’s Health Heroes.

Dr. Wilkinson has served on the clinical faculties of the University of Florida College of Medicine, Emory University and Mercer University School of  Medicine.

be retiring.  Dale’s retirement plans include spending time with his extended family, 
improving his golf game and continuing his community volunteerism.

President Odette aggravated an old knee injury while at 
her first Daytona 500 race.  The tickets were her birthday 
gift from boyfriend, Robert Schindler.  After a trip to the 
Mayo Clinic's  Emergency Room, she will be on crutches 
for a few days!

The recently published total listed was not all inclusive.  The correct total for the bell


ringing is $2,004.33.  A job well done!

Concours d'Elegance











William (Bill) C. Warner is the CEO of H.C. Warner, Inc., a retired Major of the Florida Air National Guard, a Contributing Editor of Road & Track Magazine, and the Founder and Chairman of The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.







Bill Warner has been around
automobiles his whole life.  As a
teenager he worked at the local Volkswagen and imported car dealership in the
parts department and driving the delivery truck.  On weekends, he worked as a “gopher” for the
dealership racing team and became enthralled with motor racing.  Upon earning his degree in Electrical Engineering,
he entered the family filter business and started work on the side for Sports Car Graphic Magazine.  In 1971, he began his relationship with Road & Track Magazine which
continues today.  His photographs and
writing have appeared in Road &
Track, Car and Driver, Autoweek, The Atlantic Monthly, Automobile, Automotor
und Sport, Classic & Sportscar, Porsche Panorama, and Forza to mention a few.   His photography has won awards from The Los
Angeles Art Directors, the Creative Arts Yearbook, and the Sports Car Club of
America (Photographer of the Year 1970). 
His photos have been featured in the Petersen
Museum in Los
 Angeles as part of the 50th Anniversary of Ferrari and
at the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance, in Auburn Hills, Michigan.







In 1975, he teamed with Tom
Nehl in a Porsche 911 to finish 14th in the third running of the Cannonball
Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (AKA The Cannonball run) and with
English racing great, Innes Ireland; Can Am racer, George Drolsom; and sedan
racer, Dick Starita, to finish 26th in the inaugural running of the
Cannonball One Lap of America.  The One
Lap was run in a Hertz-Unlimited Mileage Lincoln Town Car.  Warner started racing in 1978 in a Brabham
BT-8 and later in the SCCA in an ex-Bob Sharp Racing Datsun B210.  He finished 5th in the American
Road Racing Amateur Championships at Road Atlanta in 1982 in Class GT-3 (having
started in 22nd place).  His drive earned him a nomination for the
Mark Donohue Award.  In 1984 he entered
the International Motorsports Association Firehawk Series in a Camaro and had
top ten finishes at St. Louis and Sebring, top
five finishes at Watkins Glen (twice), a 3rd at Road America, a 2nd at Lime Rock, Ct., and a win in the
Escort Series at Mid Ohio, all in Camaros. 
Warner won the IMSA Media Challenge (for racing journalists) in 1984,
1985, and 1986.   He participated as a driver in the SAAB World
Speed Record Run at Talladega,
 Alabama in 1986.  Warner has driven factory sponsored road
races for Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Mercury, and Ford.  He currently races the ex-Bob Tullius, Group 44/ ex-Paul Newman Triumph TR-6
and the ex-Group 44 Triumph TR-8 Trans Am/IMSA car in vintage racing. He has
been awarded the Skip Barber Cup (Lime Rock) and the John Kelly Trophy (Mid
Ohio) for driving.  







In addition to racing, he
restores and collects interesting cars. 
Currently in his collection are a 1957 Cadillac El Dorado Biarritz, a
1958 Cadillac El Dorado Brougham, a 1955 Chevrolet Corvette, a 1972 Ferrari
365GTB/4 “Daytona”, a 1952 Muntz Road Jet, a 1971 Porsche 911T (owned since
new), a 1979 Mercedes Benz 450SL (Jane’s car), a 1928 Simplex Piston Ring
Special, 1978 Bill Mitchell Special Vehicles Development Oldsmobile Omega, a
1970 Maserati Ghibli Spyder, a 2005 Ford GT, and the two previously mentioned
Triumph race cars.  The centerpiece of
his collection was Edsel Ford’s 1934 Ford Model 40 Special Speedster which he
sold in 2008.  Over the years he has
restored a Brabham BT-8 (ex-Denny Hulme, Tourist Trophy winner), an Elva Mk 5,
a Lotus 11 LeMans (ex-Innes Ireland), the Lang Cooper (nee Shelby King Cobra),
a 1953 Oldsmobile Fiesta (now in the General Motors Heritage Collection),  a 1954 Corvette, and a BMW M-1.







In 1996, he founded The
Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance near his home of Jacksonville, Florida.  In the fifteen year history of the show, it
has raised over $ 1.7 million dollars for Community Hospice and Spina
Bifida.  For his charitable work, he was
recognized by The Rotary Club of South Jacksonville with the Frank Sherman
Award;  The WTLV Channel 12, Twelve Who
Care Award;  The National Philanthropic
Award as Volunteer of the Year (1998)and the American Institute for Public
Service, Jefferson Award.







In 2002, he was recognized by
a panel of automotive writers and journalists with the Meguiar’s Automobile
Hobby Person of the Year.  The ceremony
was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly
  Hills, California,
and was nationally televised.  Other
recipients of the Meguiar’s Award have been Jay Leno, the late Chip Miller of
Carlisle Productions, and Steve Earle
of the Monterey Historic Races.







In 2003, he was inducted into
the Road Racing Driver’s Club by British Racing Champion, Brian Redman.







In September of 2005, Warner
was named to the Steering Committee of the LeMay
Automotive Museum,
Tacoma, Washington.







In February 2006, The
Federacion de Automovilismo de Puerto Rico
recognized Bill and Jane for their contribution to the preservation of antique
and classic cars.







In July of 2008, Bill was
named  one of the “Top 50 Players in the
Classic Car World” by Octane Magazine
(UK) joining such automotive luminaries at Sir Stirling Moss, Dan Gurney, Jay Leno, Phil Hill and Lord March.







In October of 2008, Bill was
awarded the Lee Iococca Award given as recognition for “Dedication to
Excellence in Perpetuating an American Automotive Tradition”.  







In August of 2009, Bill was
appointed to the Selection Committee of the Monterey Historic Races, Monterey, California.







He has served as the Honorary
Chief Judge at the Thousand Oaks Concours d’Elegance, Thousand
 Oaks, California, and Honorary
Chairman of the EyesOn Design, Detroit,
 Michigan (2010).  He has served on judging teams at the
Glenmoor Gathering (Ohio), the Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance (Philadelphia), The
Louis Vuitton Concours, New York City, and the Keels and Wheels Concours
d’Elegance (near Houston).







Bill is recipient of the Air
Force Commendation Medal and the Florida Service ribbon and served 30 years in
the Florida Air National Guard, retiring at the rank of Major.






He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from The Citadel in 1966.

 







His wife of forty-four years,
Jane, has patiently put up with his automotive mania with an understanding
beyond reasonable expectations, as have his three children, son, Clay, and twin
daughters, Demery Webber and Dana Shewmaker, and granddaughters, Lindsey Jane
Webber and Mildred Huxley Warner.
