Meet Joe Tepas
Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville


Joseph J. Tepas  III, M.D. FACS, FAAP is Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, and is certified by the American Board of Surgery in the specialties of Pediatric Surgery, Surgical Critical Care, and General Surgery. He was Principal Investigator for the Florida Emergency Medical Services for Children federal demonstration project, and has served on numerous national committees for the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Pediatric Surgical Association.   He is a member of numerous editorial boards of scientific journals, and is the author of 150+ peer-reviewed publications, 27 book chapters, and 225 national and international presentations. As a consultant to the Florida Department of Health, Dr. Tepas has helped develop effective systems for pediatric injury control, and has promulgated policies intended to provide seamless integration of rehabilitation into systems of acute care for injured children. Research activities include NIH-funded investigation of biomarkers of acute brain injury as well as multi-institutional investigation of the role of biomarkers of metabolic derangement in defining timing and technique of operative intervention in high risk premature infants with necrotizing enterocolitis. Dr. Tepas has served as a physician member of the Florida Medicaid Waiver Low Income Pool (LIP) council, and is Chairman of the Socioeconomics Committee of the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors. He is state surgical coordinator of the Florida Surgical Care Initiative, and is the Chief Medical Information Officer and Associate Dean for Clinical Informatics at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville.

About a month ago, all Club Presidents were asked to submit names of qualified individuals for a newly formed Foundation Scholarship Committee. DG Art thanks all nominees, and takes this opportunity to announce and thank those selected.

October 24th is World Polio Day. All over the world, Rotary Clubs and Districts will fund raise, create awareness, and light up buildings shining a light on this dreaded, preventable disease, all in an effort to finally put the light out!

Please keep Rotarian John Deal in your prayers. John, 94 years young, joined the Rotary Club of New Smyrna Beach in 1946, 67 years ago! John is currently in the Halifax Hospital.
