PLEASE WELCOME CARL CANNON, CIVIC COUNCIL
Carl N. Cannon retired as publisher of The Florida Times-Union in December, 2007, after 18 years in Jacksonville, and was employed for a total of 42 years with Morris Communications, the newspaper’s parent company.
Carl, a native of Albany, Georgia, and alumni of the University of Georgia, was honored this year by the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service with the President’s Call to Service Award. With more than 20,000 hours of volunteer service, Carl’s statewide recognition saluted his leadership in numerous top-level positions. He has served as president of the Downtown Rotary, chairman of the Gator Bowl, symphony, YMCA and zoo. He has served Wesley Manor and the Alliance for World Class Education. In 1993, Carl was instrumental in bringing the Jacksonville Jaguars to town when he mediated a dispute between the team’s ownership and the city. He formed NFL Now! and spearheaded a drive that sold 10,000 club seats. Currently, he serves on the boards of the Jacksonville Sports and Entertainment Commission and Florida State College Foundation . Carl continues to serve as chairman of Touchdown Jacksonville, the group that formed Team Teal, which assisted the Jaguar marketing organization in selling 15,000 new season tickets for the Jaguars in 2010.
Carl was a member of the Non-Group, a group of about 50 civic leaders that formed twenty years ago and evolved into the Jacksonville Civic Council in February, 2010. The Council made downtown development the focus of one of its first studies and the subject of his talk to South Jacksonville Rotary.
