Welcome Honorable Cheryl Grymes

Duval County School Board

The Honorable Cheryl Grymes is a Jacksonville native who is passionate about our community and public education. For more than 25 years, she has been involved in public schools from many perspectives and believes significant change and reform are needed to assure a quality education for all students. Ms. Grymes is a graduate of Wolfson High School and received a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of North Florida and an executive nonprofit management certificate from Georgetown University. She became involved in the public school system as the mother of four daughters who graduated from public schools. She served as the district’s PTA president and was elected to the School Board in 1992 for two terms, where she served as chairman and vice-chairman. As the executive director of the Alliance for World Class Education, she worked with top-level business executives to assist with developing leaders and improving efficiency within the business operations of the district. Ms. Grymes also helped transition the Alliance into the Jacksonville Public Education Fund. Currently, she is the vice president of development for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida, an organization that places caring adult mentors in the lives of children facing adversity. Over the past years, Ms. Grymes has served on numerous boards and commissions. Her current volunteer activities include serving on the Jacksonville Chamber Education & Workforce Development Committee and the Education Practices Commission. She serves as a community coach through the Nonprofit Center and provides mentoring and resources to nonprofits within the community. Her favorite volunteer activity is being with her little sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters. She lives with her husband Warren, and they have four daughters, two sons and two grandsons.

Week 46 Rotary Minute... Our District Governor's Message:

I am going to focus this week’s Rotary minute on giving kudos to Rotarians throughout our District. This past weekend was a busy time for our District with many clubs conducting fundraising events, our 2016 District Conference & Assembly, Stop Hunger Now event and the Rotary Charity of the Day at the Players Championship.

Yes, I am going to say it, we had Fun, Food & Fellowship along with some great training at the conference & assembly. Thanks to each Rotarian involved with the conference & assembly, you each made a large impact on the success of the weekend.

Thank you to all the Rotarians, Rotaractors, Rotexes, Interactors and guests that helped pack over 50,000 meals for our District-wide Interact Stop Hunger Now initiative.

Last, I am grateful for the 40 Rotarians, including some of our Satellite club members, who spent the entire day on Friday decked out in Rotary gear to provide tournament attendees with information about Rotary and our District. Over 25,000 pieces of information were provided.

Welcome Beth McCague

Beth currently serves as Interim Executive Director and Plan Administrator for the Jacksonville Police and Fire Pension Fund.

Beth holds a BSBA from the University of Florida and an MBA from Jacksonville University. She is a career banker having served 32 years for Atlantic/FirstUnion/Wachovia in various executive capacities. During her tenure as President of First Union Jacksonville in the 90’s she held leadership roles at the Jax Chamber. She served for 8 years on the Investment Advisory Committee of the State Board of Administration.

Since her retirement from that organization she has worked as COO for a technology company, as a Florida State Supreme Court Certified Mediator and as Chairman of the North Florida Advisory Board of Seaside National Bank & Trust. She serves as a Board member of UF Health and is currently the Chair of the University of Florida Foundation.
Previously she chaired the UF Florida Tomorrow 1.7B campaign.

Monday, May 23 -- Senator Aaron Bean – Florida Senate District 4

Aaron Bean was elected to the Florida Senate in 2012, re-elected without opposition in 2014, and is currently serving his second appointment as chair of the Health Policy Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, Commerce and Tourism, Fiscal Policy, Judiciary, Regulated Industries, and Joint Administrative Procedures Committee.

Before being elected to the Florida Senate, he served eight years in the Florida House of Representatives, including a term as chairman of the Duval County Legislative Delegation in 2008. During his tenure in the Florida House, Aaron received numerous awards and recognitions for his effective, conservative leadership. He was tapped by then-Speaker Marco Rubio to chair the House Health Care Committee, which oversaw all health care policy and the appropriations for approximately one-third of the state budget. Prior to being elected to the Florida House in 2000, Aaron served as a commissioner and mayor of his hometown of Fernandina Beach.

In 2014, Aaron was named “Senator of the Year” by The ABLE Trust for an unprecedented second year in a row for his dedication to Floridians with disabilities. He has also been named “Legislative Champion” by the Florida Sheriffs Association and a “Distinguished Advocate” by the Florida Chamber.

Aaron received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from Jacksonville University and is currently the relationship development officer at UF Health Jacksonville. He also owns and operates the High Energy Auction Company. He and his wife Abby reside in Fernandina Beach with their three sons Bradley, Gray, and Walker. They attend Memorial United Methodist Church.

What: Tayla's "American Beach Picnic Theme" Birthday Party Who: Members of S. Jacksonville and Arlington E. have been invited.
Directions: At Hanna Park, we are at Shelter #1. Go thru park gate, follow road to right. Go to 4 way stop, turn left.Go straight into parking lot. Shelter is 2nd on left. Gate can give folks a map that shows this real well. No alcohol, balloons, Glass bottles.

Staying with the picnic theme the main menu items will he slice ham, sliced turkey and fixings to make slider sandwiches. The meats, plates, cups, napkins and utensils will be provided. Rotarians will be asked to bring a side dish and or drink. (A sign-up sheet at weekly meetings will be made available)

May is Youth Service Month. Come out this Saturday after the District Assembly and assist our Interactors pack over 50,000 meals during their districtwide Stop Hunger Now event. The event will be held in the Flagler College Gymnasium.

Welcome Lori Boyer, City Council

Lori was born in rural South Dakota, attended public schools, and worked at the local Dairy Queen throughout high school. She received her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and law degree from the University of Florida Law School. She began her legal career practicing primarily in land use and environmental law. In the early '90s, she left private practice to work for several real estate investment and management companies. In 1993, Lori became President of those entities which at the time had holdings from Massachusetts to Florida. In that capacity she gained significant experience in finance and construction management as she continued to use her expertise in real estate, contracts and negotiation.

In 2011, Lori was elected to Jacksonville City Council and was recently re-elected for her second term. She has served on every standing committee of the Council and two years as chair of the Land Use and Zoning Committee. In 2013, Lori received the Charles Webb Award for Outstanding Service to the Council, and in 2014 chaired the year-long review of Jacksonville’s Consolidated Government. Most recently she has chaired the Special Committee on the Capital Improvement Program which has conducted an in depth review of capital accounts and borrowing practices.

Lori was chosen Elected Official of the Year by Northeast Florida Realtors Association in 2013, and the Florida Elected Official of the Year for 2014 by the American Planning Association. Most recently, she was named the Financial News and Daily Record 2015 Lawyer of the Year at the Jacksonville Bar Association’s annual Law Day Luncheon.

A resident of San Marco since 1987, Lori became active in San Marco Preservation Society immediately upon moving to the neighborhood. Among her accomplishments are construction of the tennis complex at Southside Park, relocation of Preservation Hall to Fletcher Park, and construction of Balis Community Center. Lori was named an Eve Award finalist in 2004 for her work on the creation and adoption of the San Marco zoning overlay. Lori’s commitment to our City has reached well beyond her neighborhood. She has been active in Boy Scouts for over a decade, is a trained Red Cross shelter volunteer, and has served on the Board of the Jacksonville Historical Society and Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital, among others. Professionally, she is a member of Southside Businessmen’ Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Jacksonville Bar Association. A member of Church of the Redeemer, Lori also serves on the advisory board for the Institute of Worship Studies.

She is married to Circuit Judge Tyrie W. Boyer and together they share a blended family of one son, (R. J. Nemeyer) three daughters, (Quinn Nemeyer Carlson, Kimberly Boyer Hellmuth, and Kelley Boyer Waldo) and four grandsons.

ROTARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT THE

PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP ON FRIDAY, MAY 13TH

Our Rotary District 6970 is honored to have been selected to be the Players Championship Charity of the Day on Friday, May 13th. This means, among other things, that we Rotarians have the opportunity to promote Rotary by distributing Rotary information and an End Polio Now lapel pin at the entrances to the Stadium Course. DG Fel Lee has chosen our Satellite member Meghan Hotchkiss to coordinate volunteers.

Volunteers willing to commit to 3 1/2 to 4 hours for a morning or afternoon shift will be admitted free to the Players that day. So, work part of the day and enjoy the tournament the rest of the day. This opportunity is limited to a total of 30 volunteers; so, if you are interested, don't delay committing. We must have firm commitments. Week 44 Rotary Minute... Our District Governor's Message:

Since July of last year, a dedicated group of District 6970 Rotarians have been working on a new and exciting network and fellowship opportunity for the Rotary World. I am pleased to officially announce the formation of Rotary’s newest fellowship “Rotary on Pins Fellowship” designed to engage new generations and Rotary youth programs via Rotary pins and memorabilia. The effort was led by Past President Ed Book (Downtown Gainesville) and supported by Past District Governor Wes Eubank.

There are currently over 60 fellowships within Rotary. A list can be found on Rotary.org. Information about this new fellowship and other fun programs will be available at our District Conference & Assembly House of Friendship.

Guardian ad Litem Program

For more than 30 years, the Guardian ad Litem Program has served as the region’s exclusive advocate for children in the court system. Volunteer Guardians ad Litem are court-appointed special advocates whose sole job is to serve as the voice of the child — a voice that is separate from the child’s family members, foster care providers, attorneys or social workers.

Guardians ad Litem make a profound impact on the children they serve and the communities those children call home. In addition to providing an estimated tax savings of $2 million on the First Coast alone, children with a Guardian ad Litem are:

More likely to be adopted
Half as likely to re-enter foster care
Substantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care
More likely to have a plan for permanency
More like to perform well in school

Volunteer Guardians ad Litem undergo comprehensive training to learn how to observe children, parents and foster families. Their objective recommendations are critical to a judge’s analysis and final ruling on the fate of a child. In 4 out of 5 cases, all or almost all of the recommendations made by a Guardian ad Litem are accepted by the court.

Guardian ad Litem Program provides all of the necessary training and program coordination for its local volunteers. The Guardian ad Litem Program is supported by the Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Florida’s First Coast, Inc. in its efforts to recruit and train volunteers, and to provide simple necessities that other families might take for granted — such as new shoes, clothing, and school supplies.

Every day, 1,900 children become victims of abuse or neglect in the United States. Guardian ad Litem Program of Florida’s First Coast is always in need of committed volunteers who are willing to be a voice of compassion and care on a child’s behalf.

This promises to be an exciting evening as our Craft Social will be concurrent with First Wednesday Art Walk. More details to follow.

May 10-15, 2016 - TPC Week - all regular day job activities have been cancelled!
TPC Stadium Passes to Benefit Rotary Charity. We now have TPC Stadium passes (daily) available to everyone. The cost is $45 per ticket and there is no limit on how many you can purchase. $25 of every ticket comes back to the Club for OUR Charity fund. This is an excellent deal and a good way to enhance the Club's charity contributions. See Patti to have the tickets added to your Rotary invoice.

Week 43 Rotary Minute... Our District Governor's Message:

During the first week in May, our district membership team will conduct a Rotarian Satisfaction Survey. District Membership Co-Chairman Mike Darragh will spearhead the effort. All District Rotarians will receive an email containing a link to the survey.

The goal of the survey is twofold. First, determine what club characteristics our Rotarians most value and second, give clubs direct feedback from their members so they can better create value for their members.

Two years ago, we conducted a similar survey and were able to give valuable feedback to 30 of our clubs. The feedback is confidential, and goes ONLY to the club leaders for their planning purposes.

My hope is you will see the value of taking a few minutes out of your schedule to provide honest feedback on your current Rotary experience. Your valuable feedback will ensure we continue to be one of the best districts in the Rotary world!
