Meet Brian W. Taylor

Brian W. Taylor joined JAXPORT as Chief Executive Officer in July 2013. Taylor is a senior transportation leader with a track record of building high-performance teams and leading complex organizations.

He began his maritime career with Sealand and went on to assume a variety of high-profile positions within the Horizon Lines network. Horizon Lines is one of the nation's leading domestic ocean shipping and integrated logistics companies.

Most recently, Taylor was Senior Vice President of Sales and Operations for New Breed Logistics in High Point, North Carolina.

Taylor has served around the world during his 30-year career and holds a Master of Business Administration in Economics and Financial Management from Concordia University in Montreal.

Minutarian Update, Week 41

Rotarians of 6970,

It is with great pleasure I announce the addition of a new club in District 6970; The Rotary Club of Interlachen/Lakes Area. They are being sponsored by The Rotary Club of Palatka Sunrise, and current Sunrise member, Danny Hemphill will be the club's Charter President. Many thanks, indeed special thanks to Danny, PDG Russ Miller, Area Governor Brent Coates, member Larry Harvey and many others, for their commitment to making this happen. I look forward to personally thanking the near 30 new Rotarians, during the upcoming charter ceremonies. More to come on that in a future Rotary Minute, as Rotarians throughout the District will be invited to participate in this wonderful event. Welcome, club number 60, to our great District.

This past week I got to spend a day in the woods west of Bunnell. I realize some of our more humorous Minutarians may choose to stop reading at that point, but please continue on. I joined a crew of perhaps 30 guys, cutting swamp cabbage for the annual Catfish Festival. There were young, and not as young. Some like me doing it for the first time, and others having done it in support of the Rotary Club and community of Crescent City for over 35 years. If you are ever searching for the description of the Family of Rotary, this day offers just that.

Laura Bailet, Ph.D. is Executive Director of Nemours BrightStart!, an innovative program to put young children on the road to reading success. Nemours BrightStart! develops powerful tools and services for early childhood educators, parents, and health care providers, educating and empowering them to maximize their opportunities with young children.  These evidence-based tools are used in communities nationwide, helping struggling learners close their reading readiness achievement gap before kindergarten, and launching them on a path for sustained reading success.

Dr. Bailet is a licensed school psychologist with many years of experience in the learning disorders field. She earned her undergraduate degree at Wake Forest University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University.  She has conducted research studies and published peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.  She presents at local, state and national professional conferences on early literacy, dyslexia and related topics. She was appointed as a member of the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Advisory Board in 2013.

 Minutarian Update, Week 40

Congratulations to District Governor Elect Percy and all the Rotarians who participated in Saturday's District Assembly. Perhaps near 300 in total, it was a great day of fellowship, fun, information sharing, and inspiration. I want to offer a special thanks to all those that had a role in the organization and presentations, and all the Past District Governors in attendance: John Thompson, Bill Hill, Tommy Grimes, Carlos Giraldo, Russ Miller, Bill Griffin, and Clint Dawkins. When asked about Rotary service, I often jokingly paraphrase 70's rock band, The Eagles; “You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave”. We as Rotarians are grateful these individuals continue to share their council, insight and friendship.

April is Magazine Month, on the Rotary Calendar. Not just any magazine, but the Rotarian Magazine. It’s full of great Rotary information from all over the world, including projects, fundraisers, updates on polio, biographies, letters and more. Some of our area clubs use it as the source of their weekly trivia, while still others use it to share Rotary outside of the club. When we say recycle the magazine, we don’t mean with the trash collector. Share it with other area professionals, Rotaractors, Interactors, and more. Someone shared Rotary with you and if you’re like me, you thank them often.

Matthew Rapp, Senior Vice President Championship Management and Executive Director THE PLAYERS Championship

Matt Rapp is senior vice president with the PGA TOUR’s Championship Management division, overseeing several of the TOUR’s prominent events including The Presidents Cup, Web.com Tour Championship and THE PLAYERS Championship. Rapp also oversees top vendor management across the Championship Management events and is helping

to enhance fan experiences at these events based on improvements in this area at THE PLAYERS.

Rapp has led THE PLAYERS Championship since the conclusion of the 2010 event and has focused on significantly enhancing the fan experience, increasing the event’s charitable impact and reinvigorating its vital connection with the local community. Under his leadership, the event has seen dramatic spikes in all categories, most notably in attendance (up 32 percent) and sponsorship/hospitality revenue (up 53 percent); furthermore, THE PLAYERS has resumed its rightful place as the event of the year in Northeast Florida. It has also become a showcase for the area through increased recognition and promotion in domestic and international telecasts and other media, which is a vital tool in attracting businesses and investors to Florida’s Historic Coast.

Prior to his current roles, Rapp worked in the TOUR’s corporate marketing department for more than five years, focusing on title sponsor sales. He was responsible for more than $500 million in sponsorship agreements with companies that include Crowne Plaza, The Greenbrier, McGladrey, Northern Trust, Norwegian Cruise Lines, the Royal Bank of Canada, Boeing and Regions. Prior to joining the PGA TOUR, Rapp held several senior executive positions in public relations and communications with the ATP World Tour, the governing body of men’s professional tennis, and Burson-Marsteller, a leading global public relations firm. His first job was working on Capitol Hill with the former assistant majority leader of the U.S. Senate, Wendall H. Ford.

A native of Louisville, Ky., Rapp has lived and worked in many cities throughout the United States and around the world including Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., London and Brussels, but he is proud to call Jacksonville his home since 2001. Rapp graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991 where he rowed crew and studied international relations.

 Minutarian Update, Week 39

What great news this week! Last month India celebrated the three year anniversary of its last case of polio, setting the stage for the entire World Health Organization Southeast Asia region to be declared polio-free in March! Many years ago, when we first started the polio campaign, it seemed only a dream that we would see this day. Now we fight the last few cases, in order to celebrate in 2018 the end of polio world wide. Please continue to carry on the fight. 

Please remember, don’t just recruit members for your club. Invite someone to breakfast, lunch, dinner or coffee with your Rotary friends. You can also invite them to participate in one of your many projects. They just might want to be a part of the wonderful things you do, and the great people that you are.

Meet Dr. Kevin Kaplan
Jaguar Head Team Physican

Dr. Kevin Kaplan is the Head Team Physician for the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars and has been a physician with the team for six years.  He also serves as the Team Physician for the Arena Football League Champion Jacksonville Sharks.  Dr. Kaplan is a Team Physician for Jacksonville University, the University of North Florida, and Atlantic Coast high school.  He volunteers as a physician for numerous athletic events hosted in Jacksonville throughout the year.

Dr. Kaplan graduated from Tulane University (New Orleans, LA) with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in cell and molecular biology and was distinguished as Summa Cum Laude with Honors, Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of numerous National Honor Societies.  He attended New York University School of Medicine (New York, NY) where he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine and was distinguished in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.

Dr. Kaplan completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases (New York, NY) where he was chosen as an Executive Chief Resident, contributed over twenty orthopaedic publications, earned research awards, and received specialized training in orthopaedic trauma surgery at Seattle's Harborview Hospital, one of the busiest and most respected trauma centers in the country.  He completed a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (Los Angeles, CA).  During his fellowship, he assisted the head team physician in the orthopaedic care of the 2009 World Champion Los Angeles Lakers. In addition, he served as an assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Sparks, Anaheim Ducks, and Loyola Marymount University.  Working among innovators in the field of sports medicine, Dr. Kaplan has been trained in cutting-edge arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, as well as in joint preserving and reconstructive procedures of the shoulder and elbow.

He has presented his research at numerous national meetings and is a fellow-member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.  Dr. Kaplan recently presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons National Meeting on new technology regarding rotator cuff tears.

Will Torres has a new job as Market Manager for CFO Jeff Atwater's Office.  He will develop and execute strategies to promote statewide Dept of Financial Services initiatives in Northeast Florida and present and participate in events/panels on behalf of the State of Florida’s Chief Financial Officer.  Congratulations Will.

The Board has accepted with regret the resignation of Jeremy Miller.

Please join me in congratulating Jack Murray and his entire team that devote countless hours to our Youth Exchange Program. Once again, our District has been recognized with the Gold Level of Achievement Award. Don Peters, current President of the North American Youth Exchange Network summed it up in his letter to us with the following: “Districts with programs such as yours exemplify why Rotary Youth Exchange is the premier program in fostering the ideal stated in the Fourth Object of Rotary, The achievement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace---. ” Again, our thanks and kudos to Jack and all those associated with Rotary Youth Exchange.

A Note From Rotaract 
South Jacksonville Rotarians,

I want to thank the South Jacksonville Rotarians for sending me to Rotary PETS this past weekend. It was very motivating and rewarding. It really helped me to understand the grandness of Rotary and how we fit into it. I thoroughly enjoyed the speakers and the breakout sessions. I was even able to meet the incoming district governors for 6970, Percy Rosenbloom and Fel Lee, along with several other Rotarians from our district.

Our Rotaract breakouts were well attended with over 30 Rotaractors from many college and community based clubs. I took a lot away from the breakouts and the ensuing discussions, and will work to implement that into my year as Rotaract president. 

These seminars also allowed me to network with the many Rotaract leaders in Jacksonville and throughout the state. We are working together to better organize Rotaract to increase communication and possibly form a district council.

Again thank you for sending me to PETS and all of your involvement with our club.

Does your club need a speaker? How about your club President Elect? They just completed a weekend at PETS, and can share some great information. Give them the opportunity to share the experience that is PETS. Congratulations and thanks to all those PEs, Assistant Governors, Rotaractors, Trainers, Governor Elect Percy, Governor Nominee Fel and Governor Designate Marshall, all of whom helped make it a great PETS weekend.

Next up, District Assembly! March 29th in Palatka. Two simple words for anyone in our District, BE THERE! For those that have District Grants or Global Grants currently or hope to apply soon, three simple words, MUST BE THERE! Club representation must participate in grant management seminars which will be offered at District Assembly. Here’s two more reasons to go, it’s just plain fun and ends with great food.
