7 pm Dinner and Speech Contest

Our meeting on Tuesday, January 21 will be an evening dinner at River City Brewing for the Speech Competition.  

We will have a social hour beginning at 6 pm (cash bar) with dinner beginning at 7 pm.

      This is a social event and an excellent opportunity to bring partners, friends and prospective members.

     

      Each Rotary Member in attendance will be a judge and have a vote in the selection process for one of the six participating high school students from Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Douglas Anderson, Episcopal, Stanton and Wolfson.

 A BIG THANK YOU FOR DICTIONARIES

     The 3^rd grade students at Spring Elementary were so excited to receive their very own dictionaries. Some of our students have never received a book of any sort that they could call their own. We here at Spring Park would like to thank you and your team for providing our 3^rd grade students with dictionaries and taking an invested interest in our students' education. The affect  those dictionaries will have on our students will last a life time. Again a sincere thanks for investing in our students here at Spring Park Elementary.

Continuing with our January Rotary Awareness Month theme, allow me to offer a suggestion that may impact membership. It’s a simple twist on recycling. Please take those Rotarian Magazines we all get every month, and once you’ve read it from cover to cover, place it in the office of a local professional. When any of us visit our doctor, dentist, veterinarian, they have kindly provided us with reading material to keep us occupied while we wait. Why not include Rotarian Magazines in that neatly placed pile? Better yet, include your business card, or the ‘Please Visit our Rotary Club’ Cards available from RI, stapled inside. You could also put a handwritten note on the inside with a number to call for more information on local Rotary. For those cynics out there, and yes there are many, it might not work. So what, it’s free, and at a minimum it spreads the name of Rotary. Give it a try.

James F. Bailey, Jr.

President of Bailey Publishing and Communications, Inc.

 

Born in 1953 in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended public schools before graduating from the Bolles School. Following graduation, he attended Mercer University.
For over 35 years, Jim has been President and Publisher of Bailey Publishing & Communications, Inc. and employs 30 people. They publish the Daily Record, Realty Builder Connection and have a full service commercial printing and graphic design division, Bailey Printing & Design.
Jim is also President of Notaman LLC, a real estate investment firm and Long Branch Farms, a small agricultural firm.
The Daily Record celebrated its 101st anniversary in 2013.
Jim credits the success of the company to their ability to adapt to the environment, hard work and empowering people to work as a team.

Personal:

Jim and wife Donna have six daughters, Christina, Melissa, twins Jennifer and Jessica, Casey, and Emily and one grandson and one granddaughter.
In his spare time, Jim enjoys boating, horseback riding and time with his family on their small farm west of Jacksonville.

 Student Speech Contest and Dinner

Be sure to mark your calendars for January 21. We will not have lunch that day, but will instead be meeting for a special event that evening.  The student speech contest will feature a student from each school: Bishop Kenny, Douglas Anderson, Bolles, Episcopal, Wolfson and Stanton. First prize is a $2,000 scholarship. Second prize is a $1,000 scholarship and each of the other participants will receive a $500 scholarship.  The scholarship prizes are being sponsored by Synovus Bank, AmerisBank, and the law firm of Bledsoe Jacobson Schmidt.  If you are interested in sponsoring a scholarship, please contact Doug Matthews at doug@teaching-point.net  The competition involves a five minute speech on the topic of Rotary International's theme for the year:  Engage Rotary Change Lives.

 

Minutarian Update, Week 28 

Welcome back from your Holidays!

January is Rotary Awareness Month. Rotarians, be knowledgeable about your clubs impact in your local community. Please share that information, especially with non Rotarians. Community service is at the very core of what we do and who we are. When others in the community are aware of who you are and what you do, it will impact the projects and membership in your club. 

The next RLI, or Rotary Leadership Institute is February 1st. If you’ve never attended before, please try it, you’ll like it. For those of you that have, it’s an opportunity to take more classes toward graduation. If you’ve already graduated, you will enjoy the graduate course being offered this session. Go to the RLI Florida website and sign up soon.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) registration is open. Your Presidents received lots of RYLA information recently, but it takes your club to get behind the program, and make it a success. Please commit, and then start identifying candidates for attendance.

E. Zimmermann "Zim" Boulos

Zim Boulos is the owner of Office Environments and Services (OES), a provider of business furniture since 1981. OES is a $15 million business with 27 employees, based in Jacksonville, Florida.  Zim is also a past chairman of the City of Jacksonville Economic Development Council.

Zim is a board member of Greenscape of Jacksonville, a nonprofit tree planting organization. More than 25 years ago, he founded the annual flowering tree sale, a spring event that sells thousands of small trees at huge discounts to the public. He was the force behind the renovation of San Marco Square, a neighborhood business district near downtown Jacksonville that has become a crown jewel in the rebirth of an aging neighborhood.  

Zim is a retired International FIFA soccer official, having refereed in the preliminary rounds of the 1994 and 1998 World Cups and 1996 Olympics. He graduated from Jacksonville University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Zim is married and has one daughter.

Minutarian Update, Week 27

It’s another short week for many of our Rotary Clubs, with New Years Day a Wednesday. Family, friends, celebrations, and football will fill the week. Many will reflect on this past year, and ponder what can be for the coming one.

New Years marks the half way point on the Rotary Calendar. We have done so much, but have so much yet to do. Please take the time to recharge, and let’s make the next six months, even better than the first.

Membership Update

Please remember to take a look at the boards at the entrance to the weekly Rotary Luncheon. About half of the Companies /Organizations have a member's initials or name next to it. This means that one of our fellow Rotarians knows someone at that company who may be a good Rotary candidate. It is impressive to us that our members are so connected with the broader community that we have possible Rotary candidates at about half of the company names on the board.  We would love to see a Rotarian's initials next to EVERY COMPANY/ORGANIZATION on the board. Now that would really be a feat! Please give it some thought and fill in the blanks.

It’s not to early to start thinking about RYLA. This years Rotary Youth Leadership Awards event will be held in June at the University of North Florida. Help break the attendance record, let’s average two students per club this year. Please start lining up and interviewing candidates for this great opportunity. I have a solution for those of you looking to cut that tax burden a little bit; it’s not too late to make a donation to our Rotary Foundation. Save some money while at the same time improving and saving lives.

Community Service Project - Literacy

The week of December 2nd was Dictionary Distribution Week!  More than 20 club members distributed dictionaries to over 900 students at the following seven elementary schools:  Kings Trail, Greenfield, Spring Park, Hendricks Avenue, San Jose, Southside Estates and Holiday Hill.

The students were very excited to receive their own dictionary.

In the words of one student, "We get to keep this. Forever???"

Ken Wilson is in Brooks Rehab recovering from a broken leg; his son, Stephen came by the meeting to let us know Ken's condition.  He is in room 2636, 2 East.  His number is 345-7566.

PP Vicki-lynne's husband, Rod, is home from the hospital after a short stay and doing a little better.

Minutarian Update, Week 24

Marshall Butler is the new District Governor Nominee Designate, and will serve as 6970 Governor the Rotary year of 2016-17. Please join me in congratulating Marshall and all the nominees that interviewed.

The auction of two owner’s suite tickets to the JAGS game December 15th is CLOSED. Congratulations to Don Blackburn, Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra Beach. Don’s $2,000 bid, along with the accompanying Gates Foundation Match means 10,000 children will be immunized from polio. Thanks to all those that submitted bids.

I hope to see a bunch of Rotarians on Sunday, December 15th, JAGS versus the Bills.

Remember, we can all make a difference, give to polio and help wipe out this disease.
