The South Jax Rotary Community Project Team proudly served dinner to approximately 500 resident and non-resident men, women and children of the Sulzbacher Center on Thursday, August 22nd.  A big thank you to everyone who came out to serve this great charity! Rotaract Announcement

September 7th, 2013 at the EverBank Center (301 W. Bay Street).

 The First Coast Rotaract Club, a special community of young professionals located in Jacksonville, will be holding its 11th annual gala this year and doesn’t want you to miss the opportunity to get involved!  Proceeds from this event will be contributed to the JLG Brain Cancer Foundation’s commitment to unlocking a cure for brain cancer. The foundation is in the process of opening a Mayo Clinic Brain Cancer Tissue Bank in our city, and the Black Tie & Blue Jeans Gala will be instrumental in helping them raise the extra $65,000 they need to make this dream a reality.

Attendance: Tickets to the event are $60 each. Gala attendance includes access to an open bar, live entertainment, fellowship, and a whole lot of fun!

Minutarian Update, Week 9 (August 27th)

This week, the Minutarian comes to us from DG Art, and Youth Exchange Chairman, Jack Murray. We are reminded that the Rotary Youth Exchange’s mission is to bring the world together, one student at a time. The hosting of an exchange student is exciting with many rewards, while the commitment is minimal. The DGE Percy and the Youth Exchange Committee are attempting to make the decision of how many students will be welcomed into our District in 2014-15. We are reminded that the number we host impacts the number of local kids we can send out to other countries on exchange. Our club needs to decide by September 6, 2013 how many students we will host next year.

 Meet Dr. Quincy Gibson

Assistant Professor, UNF

Dr. Quincy Gibson received her Bachelors of Science degrees in both biology and psychology from the University of Maryland and her Doctorate in biology from Georgetown University.  Her dissertation research was focused on the social development of wild bottlenose dolphin calves in Shark Bay, Australia.  After graduating, Quincy moved to Maui to take on the position of Research Director for Pacific Whale Foundation.  In this role, she led research programs on humpback whales in Hawaii, Australia and Ecuador for over two years.  She then had the opportunity to spend a summer in Belize teaching a college study abroad course on dolphins, which inspired her to return to academia. In December 2010, Quincy joined UNF’s Coastal Biology Flagship Program as a visiting research scientist and established the university’s dolphin research program.  She was then offered a tenure-track Assistant Professor position and officially joined UNF’s biology faculty in December 2012.

Meet Jerry Mallott

President of JAXUSA Partnership

Jerry M. Mallot is President of JAXUSA Partnership, the economic development division of the JAX Chamber. Mallot directs a staff of 12 in the areas of Business Development, International, Workforce, Marketing and Research.  He led the formation of a seven-county economic development program to expand high wage jobs in Northeast Florida.  In his nearly 20 year tenure, the Jacksonville Region has attracted tens of thousands of jobs in our target industries, including headquarters, financial services, logistics and advanced manufacturing.

From July 2011 to August 2012, Mallot served as Mayor Alvin Brown’s economic development advisor. He was tasked with developing and implementing the new economic development structure and policies, which were implemented in 2012.

From November 2012 to July 2013, Mallot served as Interim President of the JAX Chamber, directing a staff of 50.  He was recently selected as one of Northeast Florida’s Ultimate CEOs in recognition of his commitment to excellence, leadership in his organization and unmatched contributions to the local community.      

Mallot is a past president of Leadership Jacksonville and the Florida Economic Development Council, as well as the World Trade Center Association of Florida.  Mallot has served on the Board of the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities, Enterprise Florida, Visit Jacksonville and the World Affairs Council.  Mallot is a member of the Executive Advisory Board of Jacksonville University School of Business, THE PLAYERS Council, Community Connections and the Gator Bowl Association.  He has been named the Economic Development Professional of the Year in both Florida and Kansas.

Prior to coming to Jacksonville in January 1994, Mallot was senior vice president of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the first executive director of the Tampa Bay Partnership.

Mallot is from Wichita, Kansas where he served as president of the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce and led economic development for 17 years. 

He received a Bachelor’s degree in business and a Master’s degree in economics from Wichita State University.  Mallot has earned the Certified Economic Developer and Certified Chamber Executive designations, the top professional certifications in these fields.   

Mallot enjoys golf and outdoor activities, has six grandchildren and has served in mentoring programs such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters for 16 years. 

Words of gratitude from Ms. Howell’s Kindergarten class to South Jacksonville Rotary Club.   According to Ms. Howell, the year end test scores showed a 60% increase in math proficiency and over 30% increase in reading proficiency for her students who had mentors.  We are truly making an impact on these great kids!

Joe Whitaker is the business recruitment and retention coordinator for the Jacksonville Mayor’s Office of Economic Development.

Joe has been associated with the City of Jacksonville since 1980 and has also served as deputy director of the Jacksonville Downtown Development Authority and as program director of the Jacksonville Economic Development Company.  Since 2001, Joe has assisted on more than 106 projects which have created more than 17,300 jobs  resulting in a private capital investment totaling $1,425,000,000.

Joe relocated to Jacksonville in 1978 to become vice president and general manager of Gaynon Iron Works, a truck equipment manufacturing company.   Before moving to Jacksonville he was a commercial loan officer for the First National Bank of Cincinnati (now Star Bank).  He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Cincinnati and a master’s degree in business finance from Xavier University.

Joe and his wife Kathy live in Arlington.   Joe has two sons and four grandchildren.

A Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army, Joe is a member of the Small Business Advisory Committee; a board member of Beaver Street Enterprise Center, and a board member of Steven Biko Charter High School.

Minutarian Update

Jaguar Tickets to any game at discounted group rates, and a portion of the ticket price returns directly to our club, for use in our projects. You can buy tickets directly from the district website (hopefully there will be a link on our web site soon). Last year this simple fund raiser reaped over $21,000 to our clubs and District.  **** Let your friends know they can buy these discounted tickets also.

Immigration Law

For over 30 years, Stephen H. Davis has been helping people from all over the world legally immigrate to the United States.

Stephen received his Juris Doctor degree from the Cumberland School of Law of Samford University in 1968 and his B.A. degree from the University of South Florida in 1965.  His professional legal experience includes:

• Adjunct Professor, Immigration Law, Florida Coastal School of Law
• Clients have included: Nobel Prize laureates, universities, medical schools, hospitals, State agencies, Fortune 500 companies, NFL team, professors, scientists, persons of international renown, entertainers, athletes, Olympic coaches, individual investors, engineers, executives, IT experts, medical professionals, family based cases, asylum and refugee applicants
• General counsel for international corporation
• Judicial Training/Court Information Officer, Fourth Judicial Circuit, Stat of Florida

Stephen received a Rotary International District Award for creating the Polio Plus Certificate which has funded the immunization of thousands of children world-wide.  He is also a Paul Harris Fellow.  Stephen and his wife have been married for 45 years.  They have 3 children, a grandson and a granddaughter.

Polio Fundraiser: The Orange Park Sunrise Club recently gave a Paul Harris Fellow to Gustav Fredrickson.  The son of Rotarians Catrine and Goran Fredrikson, Gustave completed his bicycle journey from North Florida to Montreal, traveling some 2,200 miles and, thus far, received approximately $3,000 in donations to go toward the PolioPlus effort.
