Welcome Melinda Brown, Circuit Director
Guardian ad Litem Program

For more than 30 years, the Guardian ad Litem Program has served as the region’s exclusive advocate for children in the court system. Volunteer Guardians ad Litem are court-appointed special advocates whose sole job is to serve as the voice of the child — a voice that is separate from the child’s family members, foster care providers, attorneys or social workers.

Guardians ad Litem make a profound impact on the children they serve and the communities those children call home. In addition to providing an estimated tax savings of $2 million on the First Coast alone, children with a Guardian ad Litem are:

  • More likely to be adopted
  • Half as likely to re-enter foster care
  • Substantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care
  • More likely to have a plan for permanency
  • More like to perform well in school
Volunteer Guardians ad Litem undergo comprehensive training to learn how to observe children, parents and foster families. Their objective recommendations are critical to a judge’s analysis and final ruling on the fate of a child. In 4 out of 5 cases, all or almost all of the recommendations made by a Guardian ad Litem are accepted by the court.

Guardian ad Litem Program provides all of the necessary training and program coordination for its local volunteers. The Guardian ad Litem Program is supported by the Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Florida’s First Coast, Inc. in its efforts to recruit and train volunteers, and to provide simple necessities that other families might take for granted — such as new shoes, clothing, and school supplies.

Every day, 1,900 children become victims of abuse or neglect in the United States. Guardian ad Litem Program of Florida’s First Coast is always in need of committed volunteers who are willing to be a voice of compassion and care on a child’s behalf.

ROTARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT THE
PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP ON FRIDAY, MAY 13TH
Our Rotary District 6970 is honored to have been selected to be the Players Championship Charity of the Day on Friday, May 13th.  This means, among other things, that we Rotarians have the opportunity to promote Rotary by distributing Rotary information and an End Polio Now lapel pin at the entrances to the Stadium Course.  DG Fel Lee has chosen our Satellite member Meghan Hotchkiss to coordinate volunteers.

Volunteers willing to commit to 3 1/2 to 4 hours for a morning or afternoon shift will be admitted free to the Players that day. So, work part of the day and enjoy the tournament the rest of the day.  This opportunity is limited to a total of 30 volunteers; so, if you are interested, don't delay committing. We must have firm commitments.  Feel free to contact Satelliter Meghan Hotchkiss at meghan.hotchkiss@gmail.com or Bob Massey at RMasseyJr@comcast.net.

The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira after the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles’ marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost. Written by Noël Coward, this is a funny and endearing show!

Week 43 Rotary Minute... Our District Governor's Message:

During the first week in May, our district membership team will conduct a Rotarian Satisfaction Survey. District Membership Co-Chairman Mike Darragh will spearhead the effort.  All District Rotarians will receive an email containing a link to the survey.

The goal of the survey is twofold. First, determine what club characteristics our Rotarians most value and second, give clubs direct feedback from their members so they can better create value for their members.

Two years ago, we conducted a similar survey and were able to give valuable feedback to 30 of our clubs.  The feedback is confidential, and goes ONLY to the club leaders for their planning purposes.

My hope is you will see the value of taking a few minutes out of your schedule to provide honest feedback on your current Rotary experience. Your valuable feedback will ensure we continue to be one of the best districts in the Rotary world!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

May 13-15, 2016: District Conference and District Assembly in St. Augustine

April 26, 2016

Lunch is served at Noon, Meeting begins at 12:30pm

Welcome Michelle McManamon
The Current Players Volunteer Chair

The Players Championship offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf ($10 million in 2015). The field consists of 144 players including the top 50 players in the world rankings, but unlike the three major championships staged in the United States, it is not an official event on the European Tour.

The Players has often been considered the unofficial "fifth major" due to its prestige, its host course (the TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course at which the tournament has been played since 1982, home of the iconic par-3 No. 17 "Island Green") and its considerably larger purse.
The victor receives $1.80 million, the winner's share (18%) of the largest purse of any tournament in golf ($10 million), and receives 80 points towards his world ranking, the largest share aside from the majors, for which winners earn 100 points. For comparison, the winners of the four individual World Golf Championships generally receive between 70 and 78 points. The winner also receives a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour, a three-year invitation to the Masters Tournament, three-year exemptions for the U.S. Open and The Open Championship, and an exemption to that year's PGA Championship in August. The winner earns 600 FedEx Cup points, if a PGA Tour member.

TPC History:
The Players Championship was conceived by the PGA Tour commissioner at the time, Deane Beman. The inaugural event in 1974 was played at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia, with the final round in early September. It moved to the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1975 and to Inverrary Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1976 and earlier in the season, finishing in early March. Beginning in 1977, the event was played at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida in mid-March, initially at Sawgrass Country Club's Oceanside Course (a combination of the "East" and "West" 9-hole courses). Since 1982,the tournament has been played across the road from Sawgrass Country Club, on the Stadium Course at TPC at Sawgrass.
Following the 2006 event, the course underwent a major renovation, which received very positive reviews from the players in 2007. Included in the renovation was a new 77,000-square-foot (7,150 m2) Mediterranean Revival-style clubhouse.
For most of its existence, the tournament was played in late March, two weeks before The Masters. In 2007 it was moved to mid-May, as part of a restructuring of the PGA Tour. This restructuring involved the introduction of the lucrative FedEx Cup, which concludes with The Tour Championship. The change gave the PGA Tour a marquee event in six consecutive months (The Masters in April, The Players in May, the U.S. Open in June, the Open Championship in July, the PGA Championship in August, and the Tour Championship in September).
With the rearrangement of 2007, the final round of The Players Championship is scheduled for the second Sunday of May, Mother's Day. To mark this, during the fourth round almost all players wear pink shirts or accessories, and many in the galleries also join them in donning pink garb. Also, like The Masters, US television coverage is presented with limited commercial breaks through the use of "Proud Partners": currently, this is PricewaterhouseCoopers, Morgan Stanley, and Optum.
Through 2013, the playoff format was sudden-death, lately starting at the par-3 17th hole. Since moving to the Stadium Course in 1982, only three playoffs have been necessary (1987, 2008, 2011) and the last two ended at the first extra hole, with pars by the victors. (The 1987 playoff started at the par-5 16th and went to a third extra hole at the par-4 18th, also a par by the winner.) The format was changed to a three-hole aggregate in 2014, similar to the PGA Championship, played over the final three holes, in order. If still tied, the playoff goes to sudden-death on the same three holes, starting at the 17th, the 18th, the 16th, and repeating thereafter until one player's score is lower. The format was first used in 2015.

April 19, 2016

Lunch is served at Noon, Meeting begins at 12:30pm

 Welcome Lisa Rinaman
St. Johns Riverkeeper

The St. Johns Riverkeeper is the chief advocate and public’s voice for the St. Johns River.  Responsibilities include: holding regulatory agencies and those polluting the river accountable; identifying and advocating for solutions that will protect and restore the river; working with government entities, businesses, community leaders and citizens to resolve problems that impact the river’s health; and communicating with the media and the public to educate and raise awareness about important river-related issues.

As a former senior staff member for Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton, Lisa Rinaman has extensive experience building consensus around issues and helped implement numerous environmental initiatives and policies. Lisa was instrumental in leading the effort to develop and implement irrigation, fertilizer and Florida Friendly landscaping ordinances to better protect the St. Johns and local waterways. She also played a key role in securing state funding for water quality improvements, organizing the city’s successful Manatee Protection Plan, and pushing for programs necessary to fulfill the River Accord restoration plan for the Lower St. Johns River.

Before being named the St. Johns Riverkeeper, Lisa served as a valuable member of the St. Johns Riverkeeper Water Policy Group (WPG), a group that advocates for water conservation and reuse and policies that are more protective of our water resources.

 St. Johns River Quick Facts:
•  The St. Johns is the longest river in Florida - 310 miles long. It is one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north.
•  The land area that drains into a water body is called a drainage basin - also called a watershed The St. Johns is divided into three drainage basins.
•  The total drop of the river from its source in swamps south of Melbourne to its mouth in the Atlantic near Jacksonville is less than 30 feet, or about one inch per mile, making it one of the "laziest" rivers in the world.
•  Because the river flows slowly, it is difficult to flush pollutants.
•  Major pollution sources include discharges from wastewater treatment plants and runoff from urban and agricultural areas after it rains. This runoff carries pesticides and other pollutants into streams that lead to the river. Pollution is concentrated around urban areas.
•  Saltwater enters the river at its mouth in Jacksonville. In periods of low water, tides may cause a reverse flow as far south as Lake Monroe - 161 miles upstream from the rivers
 Trivia Questions of the Week:
1.  What were the two newest schools admitted, in 2011, to the Pacific 12 athletic conference? (Before then it was known as the Pac-10.)
2.  The Canary Islands are named after what kind of animal?
3.  Within a 36-year period, three U.S. Presidents were assassinated. Who were they?
4.  How many copies of a record album must be sold for the album to be awarded a "gold record"? Is it 1/2 million, 1 million, or 2 million copies?
5.   What is the highest letter and number in the game of Bingo?

Week 40 Rotary Minute... Our District Governor's Message:
“Don’t worry. We will help you.”
“I’m from Rotary. I want to help you.”
These words were spoken by a German couple just days after the tsunami hit Southeast Asia in 2004.  While on a peaceful vacation in Sri Lanka, this German Rotary couple soon made an impact on the community they were visiting when disaster stuck. Read about this “Service Above Self” couple in the April edition of The Rotarian and how their quick actions impacted a generation of children.
If you are not currently receiving a copy of The Rotarian, please speak with your club leadership. The Rotarian is a great source of information about how your fellow Rotarians are impacting communities throughout the world.
