Hail and Farewell - June 23, 2015

Rotary Minute- Week 52

Week 52. Rotary Minute for week beginning June 29, 2015.
The day has come; Weekly Minute #52 has arrived. Writing the Weekly Minute has been challenging, rewarding, interesting and even fun for me. Informing Rotarians about events and happenings outside of their clubs is an important responsibility of the District Governor. And inspiring Rotarians to engage in the Rotary way of life is an even more important responsibility. Each Weekly Minute was an attempt to do just that – inform and inspire.
What a treat it has been to serve as District 6970’s Governor. Getting to visit the communities, nooks and crannies that make up Florida’s Crown District; getting to meet so many delightful and interesting Rotarians in the 61 Rotary Clubs that form District 6970; and getting to serve alongside the amazing club and district leaders whose passion for service make our District one of the very best in the Rotary world – all of this adds up to a year that I will treasure forever.
And now it’s time to turn the helm over to DGE Fel. On July 1 his title loses an “E” and mine gains a “P”! I know for certain that DGE Fel is prepared and ready to go. Plus DGN Marshall and DGND Brent are busy ramping up for their years. If all of you will support Fel, Marshall and Brent the same way you’ve supported me, we will enjoy years of smooth sailing ahead. So keep up the good work District 6970 – you are now and will remain the very BEST!
EVENTS:
August 1: Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) will take place at the Daytona State College Palm Coast Campus. RLI District Chair Charles Allen and his team have been planning another outstanding RLI program to help you get the most from membership in Rotary. And you will really enjoy the new venue as the DSC Palm Coast Campus rolls out the red carpet for the Rotarians in District 6970.
August 1: Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) “Welcome Home Dinner”. This is an inspiring “feel good” event where you’ll hear from the high school students themselves about the impact this outstanding Youth Services program has had on their lives after a year of study and living in another country. Reservations are available on the www.ryeflorida.org website under About RYE Florida.. click on District 6970.
August 15: Mark your calendar to attend the Be a Gift to the World seminar at the Thrasher-Horne Center in Orange Park. Hear about all Rotary’s avenues. DGE Fel and his team are already busy putting together a first class program that will enrich your Rotary experience.

Meet and Greet the next Rotary Generation and the
Hottest Initiative in Rotary Membership!
Rotary International has promoted and our Board of Directors has adopted a new membership initiative spearheaded by PP Mike Darragh to inject some young leaders (ages 32 to 45) into our club through what is now known as our Rotary Satellite Club of South Jacksonville.  The concept is similar to a junior membership in our Rotary Club, but the club has much autonomy to meet and run their events separately from our lunch members.

The Satellite Club will offer an alternate way for our lunch members to engage in Rotary by attending evening Satellite meetings.  The attraction for our club is at least two fold: (1) to interact with a younger generation who have established themselves as leaders in their vocation and/or through community service  and (2) to boost our membership and impact in the community. There is a strong belief that this new concept will quickly be adopted by many Rotary clubs and become a dynamic mechanism for membership growth.

Lower dues, meetings in the evening and fewer meetings are an attractive Rotary package for the ten or so applicants we have already. Of course, Satellite members will also enjoy community engagement through projects and speakers, social and business networking, mentoring by our lunch members and their personal professional development.

Satellite meetings will be held the 2nd and 4th Mondays starting in September.  However, the club already has socials on the calendar and a community project on the drawing board.

Don Miss Out!

The next Satellite function is a Meet and Greet,  upstairs at Indochine in San Marco on Monday, June 29 from 5:30 until 7:00pm.  Please attend this event yourself and invite young leaders to attend this social.   Ages 32 to 45 who have demonstrated strong and consistent leadership in the vocation or Community Service Organizations and who want to discover the world of Rotary and its newest initiative.
Save the Date 6/29/2015, 5:30 - 7:00pm

The Best of Rotary Minute - Week 49

The monthly theme for June is Rotary Fellowships. It is important to note that it is “Fellowships”, with an “s” on the end, and not “Fellowship”. Rotary Fellowships are actual organizational entities; not a general notion of congenial acquaintance as the term “fellowship” might imply . Though they are independent from Rotary International, Rotary Fellowships bring together Rotarians from around the world who share a common interest. As you might expect from a population of 1.3 million Rotarians, there are many varied interests represented in the list of Rotary Fellowships – wine tasting, scuba diving, cooking, cruising, golf, tennis, skiing, yoga, flying, yachting, railroads, magicians and marathon running to name a few. The common bond between all Rotary Fellowships is the opportunity for Rotarians to make lasting friendships outside their own Club, District or country. In doing so Rotarians naturally tend to promote world peace through friendship and by developing a better understanding of one another’s culture. Plus they have a lot of fun and get more enjoyment from the Rotary experience.

You can even start a prospective Rotary Fellowship if your recreational or vocational interest is not in the list of approved Rotary Fellowships. Look into a Rotary Fellowship and make the most of your Rotary membership.

Interested Rotarians can join a Rotary Fellowship by going to:
https://www.rotary.org/myrotary/en/rotary-fellowships

Event Reminders:

June 26-28: Zone 34 Regional Seminar at the Hyatt Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida. All District and Club leaders are encouraged to attend. Look for more details soon on our District website.

August 15: Mark your calendar to attend the Be a Gift to the World seminar at the Thrasher-Horne Center in Orange Park. This is the seminar where we will cover all of the major Rotary avenues – Foundation, membership, public image and youth services. DGE Fel and his team are already busy putting together a first class program that will enrich your Rotary experience.

Welcome, Dan Robie, MD

Chief of Pediatric General Surgery at Baptist Health

Dr. Daniel Robie is a surgeon in Jacksonville, Florida and is affiliated with Baptist Health Jacksonville.  He received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine and has been in practice for 30 years.  He is one of 24 doctors at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville who specialize in Surgery.  Discusses the separation of conjoined twins,
Carter and Conner

Carter and Conner, conjoined twin boys born Dec. 12, 2014, in Jacksonville, Fla., underwent a successful separation surgery at Wolfson Children’s Hospital on May 7, 2015. The 12-hour surgery began at 7:11 am, led by a team of highly skilled pediatric specialists that included Daniel Robie, MD, chief of pediatric general surgery, and Nicholas Poulos, MD, pediatric general surgeon, for Nemours Children’s Specialty Care and Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

The boys were separated at 3:34 pm and after each of their surgeries were finished, Carter and Conner were transferred to the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The separation involved a 17-member surgical care team (blue for Carter, green for Conner and white for surgical support), including Stephen Dunn, MD, Division Chief of Solid Organ Transplant for Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del., who traveled to Jacksonville to assist the team in separating Conner and Carter’s fused livers.

----Our Club in Action----

Good news! The Blood Alliance’s retiring bloodmobile that was transformed into a Mobile Health Clinic in partnership with the Rotary Club of South Jacksonville and Rotary Club of Deerwood to help the people of Haiti has finally cleared customs! The keys were safely handed over to its new recipient organization -- Zanmi Lasante. It has taken over one month of paperwork to release the bus which has a replacement value of US$230,000.  It will now serve a catchment area of three million Haitians. All services surrounding this project were donated - with very special thanks to First Coast Signs and Crowley Maritime.

Les Loggins - Police Academy Final Shooting Test

Les is just about to graduate from the Atlantic Beach Citizens Police Academy. It’s a 12-week course where participants are trained in all phases of police work. This photo shows Les' final shooting test, hitting all 10 rounds in the heart area using a M4 rifle. He thought this would be great training for dealing with difficult advertising clients! Go get 'em Les!

Congratulations!
Newlyweds, Christy Jones and husband, Taylor were married June 6.  The couple pledged their vows in front of family and friends at the River House in St. Augustine.   They are planning a honeymoon in September when they will attend the wedding of friends at the Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.  They will then head off for Rome, Tuscany and Santorini.

Rotary Minute- Week 47

This week DGE Fel and DGN Marshall, along with many Rotarians from District 6970, are packing their bags to attend the 2015 Rotary International Convention in Sao Paulo, Brazil. There they will join 20,000+ Rotarians from 534 other Districts that span the globe. There they will enjoy an experience like no other. People from different countries and different cultures all coming together on the grandest of scale to join leaders, exchange ideas and take action – action that will do good in their communities and throughout the world – action that will stimulate goodwill and fellowship – action that will foster peace and understanding. Action that would make Paul Harris proud!

To all District 6970 Rotarians who are making this journey, we wish you safe travels. We hope that you will return even better and more energized Rotarians. And we hope that when you return you will share this experience to encourage all of us as we continue to Light Up Rotary and Be a Gift to the World.
