Welcome New Member
Joe Durkin is NE Florida Division Sales Manager for Republic Services.  In that role Joe manages an eleven-member sales team and is responsible for achieving challenging revenue targets in the commercial and industrial service sectors for solid waste and recycling hauling and processing.  Prior to this job, Joe was a sales account manager at Aerotek Commercial Staffing Company for more than 6 years.
Joe and Carmen have three children:  Joseph is a Senior at Bishop Kenny,  Gabriela is a Second Grader at Alimicani and Ryan goes to VPK at The Goddard School.  Our only pet is the ghost of Keane, who was one of the family until 2011.  He cannot be replaced until my wife, Carmen, stops finding his hair in the lint screen and forgets about all the sweeping and vacuuming we did when he was around.  Joe's hobbies are volunteering with Metro Kids Connections where he teaches soccer, spending time with his family at the beach, playing games, helping with homework, and watching the Jaguars.  His favorite vacation with Carmen was the Caribbean Cruise they took for their honeymoon.

Minutarian Minute Week 8
Every 4th week the Weekly Minute serves as a recap for the previous three weeks.

Week 5 Recap: This week’s minute served as a reminder to sign-up for the Light Up Rotary Seminar that took place on August 16th. Apparently it worked as we had over 200 D6970 Rotarians fired-up and ready to go last Saturday at the Thrasher-Horne Center.

Week 6 Recap: This week’s minute was intended to spotlight our District’s Rotary Youth Exchange program, better known as RYE Florida. It also congratulated our District’s RYE Committee on a successful and well-attended Welcome Home Dinner for the 26 returning students we sent abroad for a year of study. Keep in mind we are preparing to interview the next round of Outbound RYE applicants in November.

Week 7 Recap: This week’s minute was a shout-out to all of the Rotarians who attended the Light Up Rotary Seminar and a special thanks to the Rotarians who planned, organized and presented – too numerous to mention individually in the Weekly Minute, but very much appreciated by all. All who attended are encouraged to share the information and enthusiasm with your fellow club members.
NOTE: The presentation at the seminar on the historic Membership Survey is available for all to see on our District Website www.rotary6970.org, along with many other interesting stats and information. A huge shout-out goes to South Jax Rotarian and District Trainer Mike Darragh for the insightful and interesting analysis.

Event Reminders:
•Saturday, October 11th – The Rotary Leadership Institute will hold its first sessions for the year at the Orange Park Campus of St. Johns River State College. More information is available on our District’s website.
•October 20-26 – District 6970 Rotary Days Celebration Week

WE MEET AT THE RIVER CITY BREWING CO.  Lunch begins at noon - Meeting starts at 12:30 p.m

 Welcome Sheriff John H. Rutherford
John H. Rutherford was first elected Sheriff on July 1, 2003, after receiving a sweeping mandate from Duval County voters on April 5, 2003.  He was re-elected on March 20, 2007.  In April of 2011, the voters of Duval County overwhelming returned Sheriff Rutherford to office.
Born on September 2, 1952, John has lived in Jacksonville since he was six years old. The Sheriff is married to high school sweetheart, Patricia, and they have two grown children, Michael (wife Francesca) and Lee (husband Delmar), who have blessed them with five grandchildren.
Sheriff Rutherford is a graduate of Florida State University, the FBI National Academy, as well as the FBI’s Executive Institute.  He is a 40-year veteran with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.  Prior to his election, John Rutherford served for eight years under former Sheriff Nat Glover as the first ever appointment Director of Corrections.  This appointment was significant and unique because it placed a career police officer in charge of the Department of Corrections.  As expected, John’s “vision” and ability to manage change has led to several new innovations within local Corrections, making them a National leader.
During his law enforcement career, the Sheriff has served as a uniformed patrolman, sergeant and lieutenant.  As a lieutenant, he worked in the Patrol and Detective Divisions and was soon assigned Director of the Region Five Criminal Justice Training Center, in charge of all regional police and corrections training in Northeast Florida.  Having proven himself to be an excellent leader and innovator of change during these various commands, then Sheriff Jim McMillan, placed him in charge of a study to determine the efficacy of revolvers for officer self-defense.  Rutherford produced a study on revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, which was later distributed across the country and is responsible for many agencies transitioning their officers to the Glock semi-automatic pistol.  At a time when many officers were “out-gunned” by the criminal drug dealers, this study was a high profile officer safety success.
John was promoted to the rank of Captain and briefly returned to a patrol zone before being appointment to the rank of Chief by Sheriff McMillan.  Again, because of his leadership skills and ability to innovate and manage change, he was appointed to serve as Chief of Services, Chief of Traffic/Special Operations and Chief of Patrol, where he commanded over 700 uniformed officers.
As Sheriff, John Rutherford quickly developed a ten-point plan to assure excellence in the department.  He maintains the philosophy that Jacksonville deserves the right officers with the right training and the right equipment, properly deployed and skillfully managed.  They must be men and women of character and sound judgment.

Pancreatic Cancer Overview:
More than 46,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year—that's 1 in 76 people.  The five-year survival rate is just 6%, and we recently learned that pancreatic cancer is anticipated to move from the fourth to the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. by 2020.  Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer research has been underfunded: Only about 2% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget is allocated to this leading killer, so all fundraising help will go a long way in helping us fight this disease.
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network Overview:
Founded in 1999, this is a non-profit organization that consists of a nationwide network of people dedicated to working together to advance research, support patients and create hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer.  The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network hosts the PurpleStride event in various cities throughout the country to help raise funds for its cause of fighting pancreatic cancer.

Rotary International District 6970

How do you grow a successful Rotary Club?.... by giving key Rotarians in your club the necessary leadership skills and knowledge of Rotary that will be taught at the upcoming D6970 Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI).
WHEN:    Saturday, October 11th from 8:00am to 3:00pm
WHERE:    Orange Park Campus – St. Johns River State College
283 College Drive, Orange Park, FL 32065
TO REGISTER:    Just log onto www.RLItraining.org and go to “Course Information” then “Course Schedule” to reserve your places now; prior to the September 30 cutoff date.
FEE:    $95.00 per Rotarian - includes the class registration fee, course material notebook, breakfast, lunch, facility fees and the completion certificate.
What types of Rotarians can benefit from attending the Rotary Leadership Institute?
1.    Rotary Club officers; and those seeking to become a club officer.
2.    Current and upcoming Club Committee Chairs.
3.    New Rotarians that would like to quickly expand their knowledge of Rotary.
4.    Seasoned club members that would like to know and learn more about the Rotary organization they have come to know and love.
Parts 1, 2 and 3 will be offered at the RLI that will be held on Saturday, October 11th. Some of the interesting topics include: Membership Engagement, Analyzing Your Rotary Club, Strategic Planning, Service Projects, Effective Leadership Strategies and the History of Rotary. Our class sessions are not lectures, but are taught using the “Socratic Method” of teaching. This produces fun and interesting classes through our creative discussion groups, problem solving workshops and positive role-playing sessions.
Many Rotary Clubs choose to encourage their member’s attendance through subsidizing all or part of the registration fee. We recommend that each Rotary Club send a minimum of two or three key members to each of our RLI sessions. We limit the size of our discussion groups to 15 Rotarians. So please circulate this information well in advance of our September 30 registration deadline. Walk-ins are not encouraged.
We look forward to your Rotary Club members participating at our upcoming October 11 Rotary Leadership Institute! The next RLI sessions are scheduled to take place on February 7, 2015. Please feel free to call my cell phone at (352) 214-1904 with any questions. Thank you!
Yours in Rotary,
Charles L. Allen
