Meet Benjamin Warner,
President & CEO, Jacksonville Community Council Inc.
Ben Warner is the President & CEO of Jacksonville Community Council Inc. (JCCI).  He has been at JCCI since 1998, serving most recently as the organization’s Vice President before becoming the organization’s fourth executive leader since 1975.

Ben is a past president of the National Association of Planning Councils (NAPC) and was inaugural president of the international Community Indicators Consortium, a network of institutions which seeks to advance the art and science of community indicators across the globe.  For his work with NAPC he was presented with the Distinguished Service Award, the fifth such award presented in the organization’s long history.

Before joining JCCI in 1998, Ben worked in the mental health field, where he directed day treatment programs for dually-diagnosed (mental illness/developmentally disabled) individuals in Northeast and Central Florida.  He also worked with homelessness issues, developing a highly successful pilot transitional housing program.  For his work with homelessness, Ben was awarded the Michael R. Wilson Social Justice Award in 1997.

At JCCI, Ben has staffed community-based public policy studies and implementation efforts on topics such as arts and culture, growth management, regional cooperation, and city finance.  In addition, Ben works to develop, maintain and enhance JCCI’s Quality of Life Progress Report, the Community Snapshot, and an annual Race Relations Progress Report.

He serves as a consultant with Community Works, assisting multiple communities around the world in the creation of community-based public policy organizations and the development of community indicators.  His publications include chapters in two books by the International Society of Quality-of-Life Studies, case studies for the Alliance for Regional Stewardship, and Leading Social Indicators: Measuring What Works, Making a Difference for the National Association of Planning Councils.

He was a member of the 2005 inaugural class of the Northeast Florida Regional Leadership Academy and served on its curriculum committee for 2006-07. He is a member of Leadership Jacksonville’s class of 2008 and has continued his involvement through service on the curriculum committee since 2008.

Ben completed his undergraduate studies in Sociology at Brigham Young University.  He received his Masters in Social Work from Florida State University.

Celebration of 100 Years of Rotary in Florida

You are invited to the 100th Anniversary Celebration Luncheon on February 13, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 224 East Coastline Drive, Jacksonville, FL.   The keynote speaker is our 2011-12 Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee.  Doors open at noon and the meeting begins at 12:30 p.m.   The South Jacksonville Club will cover the cost for their members to attend.  There will be sign-up sheets on the tables at the next two meetings of the South Jacksonville Club.  There is a $5 parking fee.

Bill Warner was recently quoted in Just Luxe.com: Affluent Lifestyle Guide under their Autos and Vehicles section, commenting on a 1958 Ferrari offered for sale by Copley Motorcars for $3.6 M, "If Sophia Loren were a car, she would be a Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet," Bill Warner, chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, once told Motor Trend Classic, which placed the vehicle in among the top ten Ferraris of all time. "It represents the most elegant open-air Ferrari ever manufactured. You’d be hard-pressed to find two alike, but each [is] an exquisite design."

 Rotary Youth Exchange
Our Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Rex Fan Chiang, and another inbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Jignesh Gandhi, visited the Kennedy Space Center.  After their visit they had the opportunity to meet and speak with 2 lead NASA scientists.





Welcome Back

PP Ken Weiss is once again joining us for lunch each week.  Ken has re-joined the club and brings his delightful manner back to us.  Ken is the Associate Director of Youth Crisis Center located on Parental Home Road.  Ken and Sara are still on Lakecrest Dr in Jacksonville.  Send him an e-mail and welcome him back  kenweiss64@aol.com

Meet Brian Pippin
Conservation & Efficiency Specialist, JEA

Brian has a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Memphis.  He has worked with JEA for six years; the past four as a Conservation & Efficiency Specialist tasked with educating JEA customers about energy and water conservation techniques and products.
Brian has earned the following credentials recognized in the “green” community: 
  • Class 1 HERS Rater from the Residential Energy Services Network and the Florida Solar Energy Center 
  • Building Analyst (BA) designation from the Building Performance Institute 
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) from the Association of Energy Engineers 
  • Certifying agent for the Florida Green Building Coalition’s “Green Home” designation 
  • Florida Water Star Apprentice Inspector from the St. Johns River Water Management District 
  • Irrigation Site Manager from the Florida Irrigation Society
He has completed numerous continuing education courses in building science fundamentals, building and remodeling “green” and general energy and water conservation efforts.

He is married to his lovely wife, Jennifer, of twelve years and has a precocious five year old son and a new baby boy on the way!

Board Action
At the Board meeting this past week, the following actions occurred:
Approved for your consideration into membership - Charlie Sheppard, sponsor is PP Hobart Joost.  Charlie is a past member of Southpoint Rotary and would like to continue his Rotary membership with the South Jacksonville club.  If anyone objects, please notify the Board in writing within ten (10) days.

The event at the Alhambra was well received.  A second social will be offered in the Spring-so stay tuned to see what show we will be selecting.  


Roger Painter has resigned.  He is retiring from WW GAY and will be enjoying some relaxation and travel.  We wish him well.

The Board approved funding for a water project in Haiti, headed up by our own, John McCarthy; and funds for an educational project in Brazil.  Contacts for that project were made through our former exchange student, Shannon Jaycox.


We are pleased to welcome back to membership Terry Pasket.  Terry is with Merrill Lynch and will be chairing our upcoming blood drive-let's all get to work!!



Congratulations to Ron Patrick.  Ron is our newest member and joined us last week.  Ron is Vice President, Wealth Management Advisor with Merrill Lynch and a graduate of Princeton University.  Ron is married to Kim who is employed at CSX as a Manager in Transportation.  Be sure to greet Ron at the door for the next few weeks.







A basket of "Get Well Wishes" for our President, Odette, who is at home with pneumonia.  We wish her the best and hope she will be back with us in a couple of weeks.

Meet Clive Wynne, PhD 
University of Florida
Topic:  Canine Cognition & Behavior 

Clive Wynne is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Florida.  He was born and raised on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. He studied at University College London and the University of Edinburgh and has been at the University of Florida since 2002.

He is interested in the behavior of animals, including cognitive behavior. Recently he has been concentrating on the behavior of dogs and other canids.

Carolyn Gentry and her granddaughter, Judlide, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge during their pre-Christmas trip to New York City. Carolyn's great-grandparents were present at the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge on May 24, 1883, so Carolyn has long-held the dream to walk the bridge. Carolyn said, "It was exhilarating and inspiring to walk the bridge on such a beautiful sunny afternoon. Lunch at the River Cafe under the bridge was a suitable reward!"
